it is the third ingredient. I know those of us on any benzo are supposed to not consume grapefruit juice, but how much is actually in Fresca? Is it safe?
(I realize that this is not an important issue, but I don't want to damage my liver by drinking a diet soda!!)
Thanks for answering my silly question in advance!
Lara
Hi gang, I have a question about a certain diet soda that has grapefruit juice in it?

OK, forgive me for being quite naive, but how do you people KNOW not to take grapefruit with benzo's?? Where do you find this info out?? I have NEVER heard of such a thing, it is not written on my bottle, or on the sheet that comes with the meds!! I know that if you are on statins that you cannot drink or eat grapefruit, but for the life of me, I have no idea why? No doctor has ever said a THING about this!! This is FRUSTRATION, it seems all of you guys knew!! I get all the updates, where am I missing this? I only found out from Lara a few months ago about nightshades, and believe me I have over half a dozen books on fibro!! Please, enlighten me! What is the problem with grapefruit?
THank you all!! Ellen
Thanks Karen. You all should read this! It's probably not going to hurt you Lara once in awhile by what I just read. Here's the link... Mary

hi sweet lem, lara, that was deffinitly not a silly question. one of the biggest warnings when i started on suboxone was to avoid grapefruit. i still dont know why, but i will not even touch a grapefruit and i used to eat them all the time. i dont drink soda but i never gave much thought to other juices i do drink. thanks so much for reopening my eyes to what the basics where when i started on sub... your friend,subzero58... pete
Hi guys, I will not be drinking Fresca now. I agree with all of you, better safe than sorry. I sure wouldn't want my (or anyone else's) liver to blow out because of a diet soda!!
Thank you all again!!
And Pete, it's good to see you!!

OK Lara... my question to YOU is: why are you drinking DIET soda anyway?
Haven't you told me in the past that you have trouble keeping weight ON??
I am totally against synthetic sugar substitutes, and think they should be avoided at all costs! If you are not dieting, then why drink them?
Just my 'rant' for the day (night)...
Love ya, and keep to the more 'natural' stuff!
Mary, the madhatter.
PS: What did you say about the nightshades--I missed that one.
All I know is that, for certain people like me, eating too much of a nightshade veggie like eggplant (one of my faves) brings on total joint pain... (learned that the hard way!)
Hi MaryMHB, I drink diet soda because I actually like my boyish figure, and don't actually want to gain weight, despite what my doc says. I'm five feet four inches and weigh between 101 to 104 which I know is a bit thin for the average american woman.
I also have avoided artificial sweetners all my life, but just like a soda every day and don't want the sugar calories... which is the lesser of two evils?
Yes Mary, nightshades are supposed to be bad for anyone suffering fibro.
Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant (poor you!!) and many others. But I love tomatoes and eat them once in a while too. Yet, I don't notice any pain fluctuation when I eat a nightshade. We are all so different!!
Miss you here Mary MHB!!

MaryMHB, forgot to add, WE MISS YOU, but we understand that you are busy with your husband at this point. Hope you come back when and if you've more time. NO ONE can answer an endo question quite like you!!
I looked you up a few days ago, in my list of friends here, and voila! no MaryMHB, but I'm thrilled to see you here now!!
P.S. also forgot to add, I'm NOT the average american woman, I'm Irish!!
And I'm not too thin really, just small boned.
Hi, Lara:
I will try to answer questions when I can--just won't be on every day...
If any one has a thyroid, adrenal or HRT question, you can always tell them to PQ me and I will answer (or you and Mary can PQ me to let me know which question to look for!). I'm no expert, but do have a long history of dealing with both--- and have done quite a bit of research...
OK, I'll let you off on the diet soda issue--but truly wish you wouldn't drink them--- but we all have our 'addictions'... mine is dark chocolate (at least they now say that is GOOD for you:)).
Do you or Mary know of a way that I could post a Comment on the Thyroid site--- giving an overview to 'newbies' of what they need to know after first being diagnosed? It would be SO much easier for me, if I didn't have to retype everything each time someone has a question--- I know you must feel the same way about Fibro...
Much love,
Mary-madhatter (the other Irish Lass!)
Just post it as a question and click on side-effects of thyroid-thinning hair, fatigue, weight loss or gain, dry skin, etc. By checking these things you get your up-dates for certain conditions-also list hypothyroid, hyperthyroid, it also has for Armout extract and the different synthroids. I don't like the drug updates, I preferred the precise Email for a TSH question or whatever.
Hello again. At the bottom of our responses, down the page, there is a link to grapefruit interactions. Check it out. I am not as good as Mary with these or I would copy it here. K
Here's the deal they tell you not drink grapefruit juice because it causes your body to absorb more or the med it all depends on the amount of the meds you are taking I don't want to over simplify but the bottom line if your doctor says no then it's probably not a great idea but in my opinion trying isn't going to kill you but u should fell stronger effects from the say dose you where taking before hand
We don't know how Sweet Lemon's body will react-what other meds that she's taking-We don't know if there could be a build-up over time-most side-effects seem to be permenent and if the liver can be affected other organs can be too. I can't believe anything a beverage company says about the strength of ingredients; amounts of ingredients-as I've found a half empty can in a 6-pack-I was with a friend whose girl said, "Mommy-there's something in my can-it bumps my lips." it was a finger with a diamond ring- a big diamond. She called coca-cola about it. They offered compensation big time. She asked to be re-imbursed to drive to Atlanta- meet the woman so she could give her the ring back-eat and drive home. She made sure that the woman was compesated or said that she'd sue big time-That's all she asked for-and did. She was worried that somebody would keep the ring-steal it. We lived about 120 miles SW of Atlanta.
I've tolerated med mixes that should've blown my heart out, weakened my bones-and nary had a problem-but some things that other people take without problems have messed up my body and life. Again, I'd err on caution-it's like playing Russian Roulette and I doubt that we're on this site because we have great health.
Hi Lara! The only silly question is the one left unasked! I agree with meyati. If your meds react to grapefruit juice, why take the chance. Find a soda (there are so many nowadays) that you can enjoy without fear. As far as I'm concerned, anything to avoid adverse affects! I wish you luck and as always it is great to communicate with you! And Mary, thanks for bridging the gap in Lara's ability to communicate, that means alot. Love, Lisa Z.
Hi Lisa Z, you are so right, I should have chosen a different beverage, but when I saw no diet sprite (my drug of choice lately, ha ha) I grabbed the Fresca, not thinking (I also had just spent a couple three hundred at the spa, so I was a bit jumpy... waiting for Hubby to see THAT BILL) I just wasn't thinking!
Who said Fresca was around in the sixties? I thought it was a newish product!
Me mum used to drink a horrid beverage (in the 70's) called Tab, YUCK!!
That stuff could strip the paint off a car!

Hi. The grapefruit problem is that the dose of medication is not correct. The grapefruit interacts with the receptors on the cells and the medicine does not do its work because some of these receptors are now occupied. Therefore your med is insufficient. Therefore, any grapefruit juice is going to inhibit at some level.
Check each pill you are taking and see if there is a no-no for this.
We were just talking bout Fresca. Last time I had it was 1966. Use to love it. Got stomach flu that day and could never face it again. Still makes me shiver. "every body has a story... " tee-hee
Hi endlessPred, YOU are the person who said Fresca was around in the 60's!! I thought it was a newish product! Shows how niave I can be, doesn't it? Uh oh, sorry I brought it up again gurl, hope you aren't gagging!! ha ha
Thanks for the giggle EP!!

Hi, there are several medications that grapefruit interacts with, but only if taken regularly. I would say that a soft drink containing grapefruit (rather than pure grapefruit juice) is ok occasionally, once a week for example. But don't eat/drink 'pure' grapefruit. Citalopram (which I take) is also on the list.
my answer was lost- I've had an antibiotic and several other meds where you can't have grapefruit. I've been warned about Fresca by several different doctors-the 3rd ingrediant means the third most ingredient. With many side effects being permenent-I wouldn't take the chance of even a drop of grapefruit juice getting near my mouth. Often the liver is one of many side effects. You don't know how much is too much-which is what one doctor told me. She had a patient that thought one Fresca a day would be okay because it was soda pop-not juice. You don't know how it will build up in your system. mad at my answer being lost
Thank you meyati, I so appreciate you sharing this message. And yes ma'am, grapefruit is third on the list of ingredients, so there must be a significant amount of the fruit in that soda. I will not be comsuming my fave beverage for a looooooooong looooooooooooong time!!

I'm glad that I could help a little bit. There are so many meds and different reactions-sunlight was also a no-no with the antibiotic-that could do liver damage too. Grapefruit does stop the body from absorbing the correct dosage of some meds, but with other meds- grapefruit juice destoys the liver. Just because a person has one experience, it doesn't mean that everyone will have the same experience. I don't find FDA warnings 2B adequate on some meds-I can't hardly walk-I've had PT-I spend much of my day doing leg exercises to keep the pain at bay-spend over and hour a day packing my legs in ice to keep pain at bay. I now live in a filthy house, etc. The FDA says-mild- nothing about permenent-If I get rich-I plan on going to India or Brazil and have my feet amputated so I can have artificial feet and walk again.
The warnings of side effects give only the symptoms of permenent damage and they won't list the first warning signs at all-when there's a chance of recovery. I found a site that sells extra thick and supportive socks for Marines and special forces. I need to go there and make an order-I didn't touch grapefruit at all-
Hey Sweet Lara,
If Im not mistaken, Fresca is made by Coca-Cola. Fresca also has its own website. There you should be able to find out the total breakdown of ingredients. I hope this helps. I love Fresca and it doesn't seem to impact my meds. I just have to be careful how often I drink it. I hope this helps you out, love. Take care.
In peace,
Tired Tee
I need to add to Lara's question that her interent will not allow her to get back on right now, & asked to tell you also that it is Fresca. I told her as long as it has not caffeine in it I think it's alright. Am I right? I know your can't have grapefruit with blood pressure meds or simvastatin or orange juice, but never heard of it with Fresca . I shall call or text her your answers... Mary
It doesn't matter what brand-her soft drink lists grapefruit as the third ingredient. Probabl;y a person's weight- dosage of the med- other meds- and the person's body re-action to all of the above effects-what finally happens. I wouldn't take the chance-
Thank you Mar!!
meyati is right on the money here!!
Thank you Mary of the many numbers for posting for me!! We folk who take any benzo cannot have grapefruit as well as the meds you listed. It does something to the liver, yet I know not what.
Again, thanks for posting for me when my puter went down!!!
xoxo
Lara
You are very welcome my Sis!
