I recently found I have an overactive thyroid & was prescribed the drug, Levothyroxine 75mg, only I am afraid it will cause even more nausea than I already suffer, or cause vomiting, yet fearful of what happens if I do not take it.
My doctor already has me on a daily regimen of Promethazine for my many stomach issues, & really don't want to increase the Promethazine just to prevent nausea or vomiting due to the thyroid medication.
Can anyone please tell me what side effects, if any that you may experience from this Rx for thyroid?
My mum has taken it for years & has no side effects, 2 pharmacists say that it does cause vomiting, 1 says that he had never heard that, so I am completely confused, & overwhelmed.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

I'm 51 years old I just started this med first I was on the pill I threw up everything I ate so my doctor put me on a liquid form it's not helping al all
I have been on Synthroid for almost 10 years with no issue but recently my insurance refused to cover it. I've been on Levothyroxine for 2 weeks. I get nauseous between 1 to 2 hours after taking it every single day.
Hi! Someone above me posted saying that levothyroxine is for hypERthyroidism and I can't find any literature supporting this. Nor does the mechanism of the thyroid support this, as having increased levels of T4 would trigger the negative feedback loop??? No need to give even more T4? Now, if someone has their thyroid ablated due to hyperthyroidism with radioactive iodine and needs T4 replacement afterwards, this is a different story of course. Levothyroxine is for hypOthyroidism, meaning it is meant to replace T4 in our bodies. I have some patients, as a pharmacist, who have experienced nausea and vomiting before. This if often alleviated by making sure to separate the dose of levothyroxine from other medications, vitamins, etc. and to take with a large glass of water
I know his is and old thread and question, however, all the answers saying that Levothyroxine/Synthroid(T4) is only given for HYPOthyroidism aka under active thyroid are giving incorrect advice. Sometimes when somebody is diagnosed with HYPERthyroidism aka over active thyroid (such as the original inquirer) they prescribe (T4) doses because the thyroid works on what's called a NEGATIVE FEEDBACK LOOP. What that means is for somebody with a high (T4) is that if you flood the body with extra thyroid (levothyroxine) and the body will think it's making way too much, hence slowing down production to normal and the medication is no longer needed in that dose. The thyroid is a very delicate system and can change from hyper to hypo very quickly and usually requires blood tests to monitor... Also, yes this medication can cause nausea for some people, especially because it's advised to take in the morning on an empty stomach away from vitamins and other meds.
Some doctors advise a full glass of water and some just a sip. It was once advised to always drink a full glass of water because of a BRAND NAME drug known as Levoxl (t4) would swell and get stuck in patients throats with too little water.
Levothyroxine is taken when you have an “under active thyroid “ not for over active. In your post you said overactive. Levothyroxine can cause nausea, from my own personal experience when I was on it, i would feel nauseous about a half and hour to an hour after taking it. Bare in mind some people do not experience this side effect. Some times the fillers used in this medicine can cause this side effect. If you vomit then you should speak to your doctor and stop . But do not stop without consulting with your doctor and make sure he has a replacement medication, once you have thyroid disease you must take your medicine every day. That is extremely important. I had to be switched off of Levothyroxine because of the many side effects including nausea that i suffered. I would also rule out that it is not the promethazine causing this. Be sure to always take thyroid medication on an empty stomach. Good luck hope you feel better
I have taken 5 years. I don't throw up. But it makes my stomach hurt and I get nausea up to five hours or so after taking it. I have no idea what to do about it.
I am on 00.75 Micro Grams of Levothyroxine and it makes me feel sick some times
I am a 51 year old male. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism
I had a level of 281 if that makes any sense. My doc put me on 50 mcg of levothyroxine. I did ok with that after tge firs three weeks of not wanting to look at food. After that i wanted to eat everything in site. Went back for blood work and my levels had dropped to 57 so my doc uped me to 75mcg and it seems like aftter that i have been bloated and have nauseaost of the time and my appetite has dimi ished again. Any help would b appreciated
personally for me it does cause nausea, worse when starting and increasing the dose, but also when on a steady dose, like morning sickness, its horrible, and I would love to find a way around it if anyone has any suggestions
Try a different brand. Remember this is a hormone and different brands have different strengths as well as fillers
I have been nauseated ever since I started levothyroxine.
I have also been sick to my stomach since I started this medicine on 1/16/2017.
I actually pulled out the insert yesterday and checked the side effects, as so many Drs are adamant that there are no side effects, but there is a big list of them.
Unfortunately here in Australia trying a different one was not an option, as we only have two brands, which are both made by the same people.
I am currently trying a T3 only approach, and the nausea went away when I stopped thyroxine
And remember to take it first thing in the morning when you awaken. Drink a full glass of water and wait half an hour until you eat or drink anything but water. You will probably find that you may be hungry and the medication will cause no problem. I have a very sensitive stomach and have never had a problem. Please start right away. Some of the other things you may have including fatigue and such will go away. Right now your body is very out of balance.
This is a medication that replaces a hormone you should have in your body. Its not going to cause nausea. If your dr says you need it, it means your thyroid hormone is low. You need thyroid hormone to survive. Its not a matter of deciding whether to take it or not. You must take it. The literature does not list nausea as a side effect. I've been a nurse for 50 yrs and never had a patient tell me it caused nausea.
This medication does cause nausea! Unless you have experienced it don't tell people what they do and do not feel. I have been miserable every night since starting this medication
I as well get nauseous after taking my thyroid meds. Have ever since my dr started me on this 2 years ago. Everyday!
I have been on 300 mg of levothyroxine for 5 years. I stopped taking it completely for about 2 months due to gaining weight causing more issues. I just started back up on it 4 days ago and i cannot stop gagging. And i have naseau. So yes it can cause naseau and gagging. You may need to adjust your medication if its too bothersome :) i hope this helps
Although there is nothing indicating that thyroid medicine causes nausea, any medication can cause nausea. It's not the drug itself causing the problem. It's the fillers and additives that you may be having a reaction to. For example, I am allergic to artificial citrus. Odd but I get a rash from Lemon Pledge, my mouth breaks out if I eat an orange lifesavers, and I puke when I eat a Tums of any color except white. I too, have nausea from thyroxine. I just assume it's got a pinch of fake lemon in it. I just switched endocrinologist because mine has done nothing to resolve the problem.
Yes you are exactly right I'm not on any thyroid medication it is my mum that takes it ever since she's been on it she's been feeling sick every day for 2 years she's told the doctor and she has had cameras down her throat looking for stomach trouble but found nothing she has been to the doctor many times but they never said it was her thyroid tablets making her feel sick she forgot to take them for 5 days I mean that's like them 5 days she didn't feel sick at all and that's in 2 years so doesn't that sound a bit suspicious everytime she forgets to take her tablets she feels fine and then when she's back on them she feels sick so it must be a thyroid medication thank you that's all
