What is dromomania?

Official Answer Medically reviewed by Philip Thornton, DipPharm. Last updated on Aug 27, 2021.

Dromomania, which was formerly known as vagabond neurosis, is a compulsive or abnormal desire to travel, according to the American Psychological Association (APA). In some instances it’s described as travel addiction.

People with dromomania go to great lengths to gain new experiences through travel, including overspending and sacrificing jobs, partners and security. Traveling makes people with dromomania feel alive and they often fantasize about travel.

In the past dromomania was considered to be an exaggerated desire to wander.
