My dog has hip displacia & it was recommended that Meloxicam would benefit her
with her pain better than the Remidyl she is on now. She weights 44.5 pounds.
My vet doesn't use it but he said if I could get the correct dosage he would write a prescription for her.

The dose for meloxicam in dogs is 0.2mg/kg by mouth every 24 hours for two days, followed by 0.1mg/kg by mouth every 24 hours (second dose started on day three).
I don't know what concentration you have available to you, so your vet will have to do the math.
Like any NSAID, meloxicam can cause gastric upset and should be given with food. It can also cause gastro-intestinal bleeds in some dogs. Go over the side effects with your veterinarian. It usually takes a couple days for noticeable results. I've used it in exotic patients (we don't see cats or dogs), but have noticed no adverse reactions when used properly. Your veterinarian can get most of the information on side effects, dosing and pharmokinetics in Plumb formulary. Hope this helps.

Hi, SpringerGirl! The initial dose is 0.2mg/kg, and then 0.1mg/kg once daily thereafter. Nice medication ~ it's pretty effective and I haven't seen many dogs with side effects, although you always want to be watchful when using any of the anti-inflammatories.
Good luck! I hope you find it helps your girl. Welsh or English? :-) WCV
