Generally the preferred is the drug the insurance wants you to use, in the category of drugs you have prescribed. This isn't because that one is better, it means they have an agreement with the manufacturer if they prefer it, they get it cheaper. Chances are you pay less for the preferred drug, then a non preferred one.
