It's not all that common but it can be a side effect:
"Respiratory
Uncommon (0.1% to 1% of users): Asthma, bronchitis, coughing, dyspnea, epistaxis, laryngitis, nasal congestion, nasopharyngitis, pneumonia, respiratory tract infection, shortness of breath, sinus congestion, sinus headache, sleep apnea, snoring, tracheitis, throat tightness"
You might ask your pharmacist for a recommendation for an OTC remedy. When I was taking Lexapro I used Biotene and glycerin drops.
Thank you very much. I have 8 of those symptoms. I’ve been on .5mg for 3 months. Do you know the protocol for slow withdrawal? I am going to ask my dr on Tuesday. I’ve emailed as well with no response yet. This group is awesome.
Do you maybe mean 5mg? You've been on a low dose for a relatively short period of time so stopping the medication may not be so problematic. Many people can stop without having any discontinuation symptoms.
Wait until you talk to your doctor though before trying to wean yourself off! They can give you a decreasing tapering dosage. If you do have problems there's a liquid formulation so that you can reduce by small increments over a short period of time.
Thank you. Yes I meant 5mg. I will wait until Tuesday to talk with my dr. Happy 4th of July.
I have been on Lexapro for 3 months. I finally found a medicine that helped my panic attacks without making me feel weird. This month I have a uncontrollable cough day and night. I’m on steroids, azithromax and inhaler. Still coughing. Now swollen eyes like I’ve been crying but haven’t? I think we are experiencing side effects, it just took our bodies longer to react. I’ve found you can slowly withdrawal with the help of your dr. It will just take about 1-3 months. I’m currently on 5 mg. I will update after I talk to my dr again.
did it ever go away for you? currently dealing with it and debating getting off.
I have had the same cough on Lexapro! My doctor said it could be acid reflux or allergies, but nothing seems to help. I'm just wondering if I can adjust my dosage to test that theory? Please let me know if you have any ideas.
I had and again similar dibilitating cough. I am on Lexapro for a year and a half now. First time I had deep coughing specifically at night that I had to be on sitting position and havent been sleeping well. I also slightly fractured my chest from too much deep coughing. I went through several investigative tests but all negative. I had been put on inhalers ( for sinus), different gastric medications, antibiotics, antihistamine, prednisolone, cough mixtures, lozenges, warm honey with lemon drinks, etc but nothing fixed the problem. It lasted for almost 7 months. I thought I was going to die in my one of my coughing fits. When I had acupuncture and been taking paracetamol and ibuprofen, the coughing slowly faded. However, now after six months, its back again the coughing.
The paracetamol and ibuprofen dont work. Maybe I have to go for acupuncture again plus ibuprofen nightly and paracetamol daily.
My husband took lexapro for a few months and developed the same symptoms you describe - constant ichy throat and dry cough - even after he stopped taking it he still has the cough and dry throat - it is sort of like a tic now that won't go away - he has had a endocopy to see if reflux was causing it, then a chest exray, sinus scope, allergy test and all test come back negative but he can't get rid of the cough - Dr thinks it relates to the Lexapro but has no answer - he goes through bag and bags of cough drops and it doen't really help - if you have any cure or suggestions please let me know it is driving us nuts
I have the same problem. I started lexapro in April then in June I developed a cough and hives. If you think it drives you nuts how do you think he feels? Night and day constantly coughing. You know it is not good for anyone's physical and mental health. I have not tried to d/c lexapro yet due to all the horrible stories I hear about withdrawal. I don't get adequate rest at night from coughing all night. Everyone is worried about me, I've been to multiple doctors including ER. No one can help me they just prescribe more drugs, example: nexium for possible indigestion, hycodan for cough, Zantac for hives I developed, antibiotics for possible infection, inhalers, steroids. Nothing helps except for hycodan but it is temporary relief. I'm thankful for the hycodan bc it has preserved some of my sanity. I can say lexapro helped my panic attacks, I'm so torn about what to do bc it has made a difference but caused another possible problem.

This might be a coincidence but 24 hrs after I started taking over the counter Systane Zaditor antihistamine eyedrops ( Ketotifen Furmarate Ophthalmic eye drops) the cough stopped. I bought it a Rite Aid. Hope it helps.
Hello praise11. Yes, possibly might be. Up to 9% of people taking Lexapro experience a dry mouth. I'll dig a bit further and see what I might find. Likely its a side effect that you're having but on the rare side and so hasn't been reported as such. (itch throat/cough) Regards, pledge
Hello Pledge,
thank you for responding

You are welcome. have a great day.
I suppose it could as it can cause a decrease in the production of saliva, but I doubt that it is actually the cause of your symptoms. Keeping a supply of lozenges handy would be the easiest fix. Otherwise you might want to investigate whether you have any allergies.
Thank you for your response
