I had a MRI and found out I have a sphenoid mucucele. I saw a specialist yesterday and he prescriped steroids, nasal spray and Clindamycin hcl. After getting home and reading the warnings on the Clindamycin, it says that it that it can cause a severe condition (Clostridium difficile associted diarrhea. Should I be taking this considering I have other stomach issues already, Gastristis, Mild diverticulitis, and my family doctor seems to think I have IBS and I recently had to polyps removed. I'm really scared to take this considering the risks and the warning saying symptoms of this condition may not show up for months after you finish the medication. My doctor is out this week so I can't ask her. How safe is this medication, and is there something safer that can be prescribed?
Is Clindamycin hcl safe to take if you have already have stomach issues?

C.Difficele is a bacteria that can be treated if it does occur. Eating active culture yogurt and or taking probiotics will help protect against it. Clindamycin is recommended for bowel needs because it is broad spectrum, it goes after alot of different bacteria, and it acts against protozoa in the bowel. I have seen alot of Cl diff in my life and the ones who really have a problem with it are the people who were already very ill. If you stay alert for any signs of watery diarrhea, replace the good bacteria in your bowel with the yogurt or probiotic, and call the dr with any signs of diarrhea, you would most likely be ok. If you are very concerned, you should indeed talk to the a dr you trust. I'm assuming since a gastroenterologist ordered it he knows what he's doing with you.
Thanks for replying No, a eyes, ears, and nose doctor ordered it. I have a sinus mucocele (from my understanding this a a pocket of mucus that is trapped and if it isn't treated in can grow larger and cause problems.)in my sphenoid sinus and he is trying clindamycin, steriods and nasal spray first to try to get rid of it instead of having sinus surgery. I have a CT scan on my sinuses in 2 weeks to see if it worked. I take the clindamycin 300mg 3 times a day until then.
I recently had a endoscopy on my stomach and colonoscopy. I had 2 polyps removed and found out I have gastritis and mild diverticulis. I was concerned that the clindamycin might aggravate them. And I didn't care much for the warning on the pamplet that the pharmacist gave me for my medication.
My appointment was late yesterday afternoon so I didn't get a chance to contact my family doctor about it and didn't realize the problems that could come with the clindamycin when the doctor prescribed it. And I wanted some input from someone that has used it.
Well the fact of what the drug does, and the c.diff don't change. Did you tell the ENT of your gi problems? It shouldn't effect the gastritis, Don't lay down for 30 min after you take it, to avoid heartburn/nausea. If you're really worried about it, I would call my primary first thing Monday am and talk to him about it.
No I didn't tell him about it. I didn't know the history of the medication when he wrote the prescription. My pamplet does say drink plenty of water and not to lay down for a half hour. I'll take them this weekend and if I have any problems I'll call my family doctor on Monday. I was just curious if a lot of other people had taken Clindamycin and had any problems with it and was curious if it would affect my digestive health. Myself I had never heard of it until now and had never seen a warning on a prescription pamplet like that before.
Thanks so much for your feedback.
Its nice to know somebody actually reads them, lol
