Currently on 3 mg Ativan while getting on 10 mg Celexa. Not handling the anxiety. My doctor is thinking of changing me to Klonopin. Will it work better and can I just switch straight over? What would be the dose equivalent? I am very sensitive to meds, and very concerned about withdrawals on changing. Is Klonopin stronger than Ativan? Not sure about how the doses measure up. Would it end up being too much? I am very slender, 120 lbs. I have interstitial cystitis and have lost 26 lbs in last 6 months due to anxiety and diet

I know this is an older question but I wanted to add my experience because I had to switch straight from 3yrs of Ativan over to Klonopin and I didn’t find much information when I was switching. So, I didn’t ween from the Ativan but I was needing more Ativan in a shorter period of time and we decided to try Klonopin instead. They are supposedly equal in strength 1-1 but I found this not to be true the first week or so. Taking a whole .50 pill (that equals 1mg Ativan) knocked me out and I couldn’t function at first and had to take less at a time or I felt drugged and zombie. I had NO withdrawal issues, nothing bad. However, the two meds feel very different to me. It took an hour for me to even realize I took anything, Klonopin is SO smooth, there is no abrupt change. There’s no idk, euphoric type feeling? I just felt like Me, the old me. My mood was fine but I still felt my old “normal” anxiety also, which to me wasn’t bad. Again, the first week took some adjusting with dosage levels until my body got used to it. It last much longer than the Ativan did.. I’m two months in and I say to anyone wondering about a switch, doesn’t hurt to try it and see how it works for you. I’m now on the .50 twice a day and it’s worked out fine. Sometimes I take less because I still can get overly sleepy and some days I just don’t feel I need a full nightly dose. The only thing that I just experienced was taking my morning pill and a few hours later, I had a full blown, out of the blue panic attack, which I have not had in ages and there was nothing I could really do about it. I was at a loss, I find Ativan was better for panic attacks and Klonopin good for my GAD, not for what happened with my bad panic attack. I was pretty surprised as i didn’t know I could panic like that on the Klonopin but oh boy, did I!!! I took another 1/4 pill which was pretty pointless because I had to use my own resources to come down from the attack long before that added piece would even matter. I guess what I’m saying is, I prefer Ativan when needing something quickly and for panic bit yes.. the switch has been successful so far.
( I know everyone’s experiences are different but this was mine)
Both are benzos, there is no withdrawal. I changed from Ativan to Klonopin a while back. At that time, my doctor stated that Klonopin is stronger, but I am not sure. Klonopin, however works for a longer time than Ativan, it has a longer half life. The dosage is the same. One mg. of Ativan is comparable to one mg. of Klonopin. Ask your doctor, he should be able to answer these questions.
