I've been controlling my BS with cinnamon vitamins but my endocrinologist insisted I take metformin ER 500 mg. I took my first metformin pill earlier yesterday and now it's 4 am and I'm up researching the connection between metformin and elevated BP. My chest and stomach was so hot I had to get up and pee. Then a few minutes later had diarrhea checked BS it was 109 but my BP was 168/97 yet I don't have BP problems. I chewed some baked garlic and BP went down to 134/79. I didn't even have BS problems until they declared Covid19 a pandemic.
My avg BS 14 day is 116 and my BP has always been 118-124/78-83. So I don't know what's going but I'm going back to watching what I eat and cinnamon vitamins and cinnamon tea. I will not enable bad eating habits by taking a bad medication.
I have been complaining to my doctor over the past year that metformin raises my BP. I quit taking the metformin when my BP got so high that they doubled my BP meds and still my BP was high. My Bp has been normal with a lower dose of BP meds, However the doc insisted I go back on metformin 500mg, and BP went through the roof. Not my imagination and obviously metformin CAN raise blood pressure.
Just started Metformin and BP went off the scale. Definitely s causal link. Any alternatives to just quitting metformin. I'm not sure why they didn't list this as a side effect . Lots of anecdotal evidence .
I made major changes to my diet, increased proteins and lowered carb intake. I rarely eat potato, rice and pasta. I found a bread that has about half the carbs of most breads and still do not eat it very often. No soda or juice and lots of water. More veggies and less fruits. It was not easy and doing it gradually has helped me to stick to eat. My A1c's are way down and blood pressure is normal. I am still completely off of metformin. Still searching for time to exercise, but I am a senior in college and working so my free time is spent sitting at a computer doing homework. Good luck to you. I think less drugs can be best, but I also think you need to consult your doctor on a regular basis.
I started Metformin on August 17, 2018, I had my BP checked that morning at my doctors office. By Monday my BP was 139/110 I felt like I had take an overdose of caffeine pills. By Wen. it was even higher and I was not sleeping. Friday I had an anxiety attack and call the doctor in Denver. I was told to stop taking it and they would get back to me. They told that I don't do meds well sometimes. It is Sunday and my BP is still to high 152/99. I am concerned. It looks like Metformin plays a bigger part in high blood pressure that doc's would like to admit to.
Metformin has been generally well tolerated. About 20% of patients experience mild, transient side effects sometime during therapy. Here is a list of side-effects for metformin

Increases in blood-pressure has not been reported with metformin. It is most likely a coincidence.
