Hi, Goldenbear!
It doesn't have to be exact and it doesn't have to be 8 hours apart.
I take mine at 7, 12, and 6:00pm. You can take buspirone with or without food but take it the same way each time.
This was the recommendation of my psychiatrist.
If you need to take a medication three times a day that means taking it every 8 hours. For me (I also take Buspirone 3 times a day) I take my first dose at 8am, 2nd dose at 4pm, and the third dose at 12am. If I am worried about falling asleep before my third dose, I set an alarm and leave the tablet on my nightstand with a glass of water. This is a great dosing schedule as it allows the drug to be in my body at a consistent rate all day everyday. I have been taking Buspirone every 8 hours since 2001. We are all different, but I hope this helps. Good luck to you!
