Sometimes when I am sitting down doing nothing I will all of a sudden gasp for breath. This happens especially when I am talking. It is not like I am short of breath but it is as if my breath just gets cut off and I gasp. I recently learned that I have scarring on my lungs from a chest x-ray but have yet to receive a diagnosis. Can you tell me if there is a medical term to describe this gasping or what it might be?
My breath gets cut off?

I get that sometimes too, though it's very uncommon for it to happen to me. It's like there's a short circuit between your body and brain and your body kind of forgets to breathe for a split second. That's what it feels like to me. I always just figured it was some sort of tic. I have other "tics" too (I looked it up, apparently it's something called myoclonus), my limbs kind of jump up on their own, the muscles in my back do the same thing, too, and I have this "tic" where I click the back of my throat with my tongue. So the breathing thing is the most normal of all of those things I experience LOL!
I'm sure one of the nurses that are here on this site might be able to give you a better answer though.
