My gastro prescribed two 25mg of amitriptyline at night to start for my IBD D. This seems like a high dose, she said she was giving me a low dose. My two concerns is weight gain and is the dose too high? I’m scared to start the medication because you can’t Just stop it. I took Zoloft once and had a horrible experience and weight gain that took years to come off since it messed up my metabolism. Does this mess with your thinking as well? I just don’t want the side effects to be a new slew of problems added to my severe IBS. I have it all day everyday and gets worse with age! I can’t do anything. I hope someone can address my concerns I’d greatly appreciate it. I need my life back!
Has anyone had weight gain with taking amitriptyline for IBS-D?

Answers
Hi, Classic!
As with most, if not all, psychotropic medications there is a potential for weight gain:
"Metabolic
Common (1% to 10% of users): Thirst, weight increased"
This also means that 90-99% of users will not gain weight.
" Maintenance doses of 75 mg were reached by initiating amitriptyline at 25-50 mg and titrating up by 25 mg weekly"
Hope this may help some.
