I was on 50 mg Metoprolol succinate er for 21 years to prevent migraines. I am weaning off down to 12.5 mg. I have 2 more days to take it then stop. For the last week I haven't been able to sleep feel terrible. I don't know how much longer I can go without sleep.
Has anyone had trouble with insomnia when weaning off metoprolol succinate er?

I just found this forum on the internet. I was trying to find someone who is having the same issues as me right now. I was put on Metoropol about 2.5 weeks ago due to a rapid aFib episode. First time ever getting one and was diagnosed with afib. I started getting really bad side effects and had to come to the ER. All tests came back normal and ER doctor dismissed it as anxiety. I looked up the side effects of this drug and it listed a lot of what I was feeling. I stopped taking it. It’s been over 24 hours and I’m still feeling numbness in my legs and it occasionally moves to my arms or hands. Then my hands go from cold to sweaty. I get this weird feeling in my heart and my head starts to feel heavy or pressure. It’s really a weird sensation and I’m surprised I haven’t had a panic attack from it. I’m trying to remain calm. But I haven’t been able to sleep the last two nights. It’s frustrating. I did not get out of bed at all yesterday.
I’m prepared to wait it out. Luckily I only took it for 2.5 weeks or else coming off of it would take longer.
I’m hoping you will see this and reply back. How long did it take your body to go back to normal? We’re you able to sleep again?
Are you saying Metoprolol helps you sleep?? I was put on it a year ago as a beta blocker. I am tired and fatigued most of the time. The rx bottle says to take in the a.m. I could sleep all day if I allowed myself. From what you wrote, I think I should ask my cardiac doc if I could take at night. I have other medical problems that have me tired all the time, but, if this is contributing to the sleep trouble, maybe a change is in order. Sorry I could not help with your problem. Best wishes.
Chelle; It can work both ways, Metroprolol is a beta blocker and can cause fatigued or sleepy and if you are taking just one a day you could ask the Dr. if at night would be ok. and that may solve your problem. It would for sure be worth a try.
I didn't know it helps you sleep. When I was taking it I was having trouble sleeping. One of the side effects is insomnia so I thought if I went off of it I would feel better. But now weaning off of it I have severe insomnia. None of the over the counter are helping. I don't have high bp. I put a call into my dr's office but have to wait till they call back. Good luck to you I hope you can take it at night.
Ok Ladies, with different Beta blockers we all react differently. It can cause restlessness and also sleep.
As a side effect, it just depends on how it works for you. And there are many factors too. such as dose. the way you metabolize the medication etc. Just like many other medications what is good for one other can't take. And if you lucky it may help you sleep also. you have to try really to see how it affect you. unless the doctor wants to try something else. Hope this clears it up for you. Best wishes
Thank you again.
Sorry, Alyivia012412. What you should do is call your doctor and let them know what is going on. what is happening right now is the metroprolol causes some drowsiness and helps you sleep but as you go off of it, you can't sleep and YOU REALLY CAN'T TAKE ANYTHING OVER THE COUNTER BECAUSE IT COULD RAISE YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE FAST SO BE SAFE FRIEND AND CALL YOUR DOCTOR AND LET HIM OR HER KNOW YOU HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO SLEEP SINCE THEY STARTED TO TAKE YOU OFF OF THE METROPRONOL AND PLEASE DON'T GET TEMPTED AND TAKE ANYTHING OVER THE COUNTER WITHOUT THE DOCTORS OK. GOOD LUCK. chuck1957
Thank you do you think I might have to go back on it? Why would your bp go up if you take an over the counter sleep aid?
Nope, you, should not have to go back on the Metoprolol this is just until your system returns to normal. and sleep aids over the counter are almost all Decongestant's and the side effect of them is to raise the blood pressure. Which is why many with high blood pressure have to take special medications.
Enjoy your evening it's going to be all okay.
Thank you. Good to know. You have been very helpful!
