I've been slowly increasing the dose of buspirone but still feel jittery most of the time. The doctor told me to use Klonopin (Clonazepam) to take the edge off until the buspirone kicks in fully. I'd rather not be using benzos because they are addictive. Has anyone used L-theanine or ashwagandha, or valerian root with Buspirone without side effects? Are any of these supplements safe to take with Buspirone? Do you recommend anything else?
Does anyone use anti-anxiety supplements along with buspirone?

I tried L-Theanine in various doses and did not like how it made me feel. Some people call it a “focused feeling”. It just made me feel jittery. I noticed no difference good or bad with ashwagandha supplements. I did have a little luck with valerian, but it made me drowsy. Like you when I started taking Buspirone about 20 years ago, my PCP prescribed to me a low dose benzo as needed (.25 Xanax) which I did take with success. I know benzos get a bad rap, but like my doctor told me at the time, “this is the exact time you should be using them.” The Buspirone went to work as I increased the dose and still works fantastic to this day. 45mgs a day. We are all different, and I hope this helps. Good luck to you.
Thank you so much for your post. I was wondering if you take the 45 mg all at one time? I'm taking 5 mg, 3 times a day, one with each meal. My doctor believes in the L-Theanine--she said that's the only supplement where there's actual data proving it helps. I haven't tried it yet... my Amazon order was lost. (maybe that's a sign... )
We are going to increase the dose of Buspirone slowly until I get to 30 mg. If there's no improvement, then we will switch to a different class... an SNRI. I've already tried 2 different SSRIs, with no luck. In the meantime, I have my trusty benzo to help. I get the .5mg and cut them in quarters! Even that tiny dose helps take the edge off.
My doc said the same thing about L-Theanine. I guess it made me feel more “focused” but with my anxiety, I want to feel relaxed. I take 15mg every 8 hours. If I’m having a rough phase, I’ll bump it up to 15mg every 6 hours. For me, the timing is key since Buspirone leaves the system so quickly. With my dosing schedule it is always in my body and that works. I think when I started, I took 5mg 4 times a day and gradually increased. For me SSRI’s and SNRI’s did not work as well as the Buspirone and I simply had too many side effects. I hope this helps! Hang in there!
Thank you! I am more optimistic now. I tried taking the entire dose all at one time (for convenience) and I was a wreck. It took me several weeks to get straightened out. That's why I'm spacing the pills apart by 5 hours now with meals. The last one is at 6 pm with dinner, and I go to sleep about 10 pm, but I wake up anxious. I guess it's a long time from 6 pm until my 8 am dose. I might have to rethink the times I'm taking it. They say to always take it the same way... either with or without food. I just find it easier to take it with meals. I really hope it works... the thought of trying another class, like an SNRI (Effexor, Cymbalta) etc. is not something I want to do. Can I assume you no longer need to supplement with a dose of benzo? The 45 mg of Buspirone works well enough? I'm also retiring soon, and I think that alone is going to really help with the anxiety!
I am feeling the need to increase my daily dosage I take 25 mg in the morning and 10 mg at night so I can sleep. Going in to see the doc soon and am looking at some dosage options. What are the times of day and dosage you are taking the 45 mg in? Thanks
I take 15 mg every 8 hours. 8am, 4pm, and midnight. The midnight one is tough because I have to set an alarm to take it. This has been the best schedule for me as I used to wake up anxious. Since I started the midnight dose the morning anxiety has gone away, and by the time I get to work I’m close to my 8am dose. The 4pm dose helps my post work anxiety as well.
Glad you have found a regimen that works for you. It will be a year in February and still working on it. Do you have days when you have breakthrough anxiety, as if the buspar isn’t working?
