Root canal performed Tue swelling and pain developed Wed, amoxicillin prescribed Thur morning. Fri night now and swelling is worse cheek is hot to touch. When will antibiotic start to work?
Amoxicillin - after two days the abscess is worse any suggestions?

Take something like Aleve or advills for the swelling, hope your well by now.

It is working. Its job is to get rid of the infection not ease pain. Clindamycin should be used as a last resort because it's one of the few drugs that will get rid of resistant bacteria and overuse will change that. Take some motrin for the pain.

Visited dentist this morning she said that amoxicillin alone was unable to target this as it could be an anaerobic bacteria so she added flagyl, 8 hrs later its feeling much better. Thanks for your advice.

Yes, you need a prescription for Clindamycin which is similar to Amoxicilin, but is used for dental infections and after dental surgery. You can call the oral surgeon or dentist's office and they can call the prescription into your pharmacy. The difference can be noticed within a day.

Thanks for your help. Visited dentist first thing this morning, sachet of high dose amoxicillin and flagyl tabs prescribed. Cap was removed and tooth was left open to allow it to drain and heal. Gargling warm salt water to draw out the infection. Ponstan and paracetemol every few hours for pain. swelling is receeding and I can feel its on the mend. thanks again for advice.
