Cobicistat may significantly increase the blood levels of rifabutin. This may increase the risk of serious side effects including low white blood cell count and an eye condition known as uveitis, which causes inflammation and swelling of the middle layer of the eye and can lead to blindness. Rifabutin may also significantly reduce the blood levels of cobicistat, which may reduce its effectiveness in treating HIV infection. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. Your doctor may already be aware of the interaction, but has determined that this is the best course of treatment for you and has taken appropriate precautions and is monitoring you closely for any potential complications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Using rifabutin together with atazanavir may increase the effects of rifabutin. Contact your doctor if you experience nausea, vomiting, tiredness, abdominal pain, yellow skin or eyes, and unconsciousness. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. Food can enhance the levels of atazanavir in your body. To ensure maximal oral absorption, atazanavir should be administered with or immediately after a meal. This will make it easier for your body to absorb the medication.
