Drug interactions
Moderate drug interactions
Moderate:
methyl salicylate topical apixaban
Applies to: Heet Analgesic Liniment (methyl salicylate topical) and apixaban
If you are currently taking apixaban, you should talk to a healthcare professional before using methyl salicylate topical or similar products. Some of the medication in methyl salicylate topical may be absorbed into the bloodstream following application to the skin. This can result in side effects such as bleeding, particularly if you are also treated with blood-thinning medications. Absorption of methyl salicylate topical may be increased with frequent applications; use of large quantities or over large areas of skin; use of ointment-based formulations; and use of covered dressings or heating pads over application areas. You should use methyl salicylate topical exactly as instructed in the product labeling or by your healthcare provider, and seek immediate medical attention if you experience any unusual bleeding or bruising, or have other signs and symptoms of bleeding such as dizziness; lightheadedness; red or black, tarry stools; coughing up or vomiting fresh or dried blood that looks like coffee grounds; severe headache; and weakness. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Disease interactions
5 potential interactions Applies to: 5 conditions, including Prosthetic Heart Valves - Thrombosis Prophylaxis, Liver Disease, Bleeding Disorder, Mitral Stenosis, and Antiphospholipid syndrome.
Antiphospholipid syndrome
Moderate:
apixaban
Apixaban has a moderate potential interaction with Antiphospholipid syndrome.
Direct acting oral anticoagulants including factor Xa inhibitors and some thrombin inhibitors as dabigatran, are not recommended for use in patients with antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). Treatment with these drugs has been associated with increased rates of recurrent thrombotic events, especially in patients with triple positive APS.
Bleeding Disorder
Major:
apixaban
Apixaban has a major potential interaction with Bleeding Disorder.
The use of factor Xa inhibitors is contraindicated in patients with active pathological bleeding as these agents increase the risk of bleeding and can cause serious or fatal hemorrhages. Caution is recommended when prescribing factor Xa inhibitors to patients at increased risk of bleeding, including patients undergoing procedures where bleeding may cause serious complications. Such patients include those undergoing spinal/epidural anesthesia or spinal puncture; these patients are at high risk of an epidural or spinal hematoma, which can result in long-term or permanent paralysis. In general, when using factor Xa inhibitors, the risk of thrombotic events should be weighed against the risk of bleeding.
Liver Disease
Moderate:
apixaban
Apixaban has a moderate potential interaction with Liver Disease.
The use of factor Xa inhibitors (including apixaban and edoxaban) is not recommended in patients with moderate or severe liver dysfunction (Child-Pugh B or C) as these patients may have intrinsic coagulation abnormalities.
Mitral Stenosis
Moderate:
apixaban
Apixaban has a moderate potential interaction with Mitral Stenosis.
The use of some factor Xa inhibitors (including apixaban, edoxaban, and rivaroxaban) is not recommended in patients with prosthetic heart valves; safety and efficacy have not been established in such patients.
Prosthetic Heart Valves - Thrombosis Prophylaxis
Moderate:
apixaban
Apixaban has a moderate potential interaction with Prosthetic Heart Valves - Thrombosis Prophylaxis.
The use of some factor Xa inhibitors (including apixaban, edoxaban, and rivaroxaban) is not recommended in patients with prosthetic heart valves; safety and efficacy have not been established in such patients.
