Usual Adult Dose for Diphtheria Prophylaxis
<= 48 hours duration:
Pharyngeal/laryngeal disease: 20000 to 40000 units.
Nasopharyngeal lesions: 40000 to 60000 units.
>= 3 days duration: 80000 to 120000 units.
Usual Pediatric Dose for Diphtheria Prophylaxis
<= 48 hours duration:
Pharyngeal/laryngeal disease: 20000 to 40000 units.
Nasopharyngeal lesions: 40000 to 60000 units.

Other Comments
Units refers to International Units (IU).
Patients with suspected diphtheria infection should receive diphtheria antitoxin as quickly as possible. A bacteriologic confirmation is not warranted prior to administration in such instances.
Continue and complete the basic immunization schedule for children after administration of diphtheria antitoxin.
