Ziconotide Levels and Effects while Breastfeeding

Summary of Use during Lactation

No information is available on the clinical use of ziconotide during breastfeeding. Ziconotide is usually not detectable or barely detectable in plasma after intrathecal administration, and because it is a peptide with a molecular weight of 2639 Daltons, the amount in milk is likely to be very low. It is also likely to be partially destroyed in the infant's gastrointestinal tract and absorption by the infant is probably minimal. If ziconotide is required by the mother, it is not a reason to discontinue breastfeeding. Breastfed infants should be monitored for sedation, which may result in respiratory depression or feeding problems.
