I told the first 2 pills. Had a bad reaction stop taking it. Hearing loss has not come back after 2 weeks and ringing in my ears is unbearable. Will this get better? Any suggestions?
I know this is a old thread but I was recently prescribed a Z-Pack for a sinus infection & I too have all of these “rare” side effects. I completed my 5 day dose & now I have a constant pressure feeling in different spots of my head, the burning sensation in my scalp, occasionally ear ringing. Tingling sensation in my fingers, depression & anxiety! When will it end?! This is so stressful!
I am Currently taking a 5 day course of Zithromax. I am half way through the treatment for a middle ear infection. This last night I developed a constant ringing in my right ear and has been going on ever since. After some research I found out that it could possibly be a side affect of the medicine. Also the ringing may be a symptom of my ear infection. It is apparently caused by a buildup of fluid. I am trying to reverse this with hydrating regularly and clearing my sinuses. I will wait to see if the ringing will subside with treatment. It very well could be an allergic reaction to the medicine. I have contacted my doctor and I am still waiting for a response. Yet, I did not suffer the symptoms as some of you have listed above. I hope this helps!
My doctor has contacted me back and said that the ringing was caused by swelling in the ear and that I have been prescribed a short course of steroids to combat that swelling. I will notify later of the name of the steroid.
In an attempt to treat a bad upper respiratory and sinus infection, I was prescribed a z-pack/Zithromax by my doctor in the fall of 2011. I had previously taken the medicine approx ten years before for a similar illness and had no problem, but this time, immediately after the first dose, I had an extreme reaction: more than 50% hearing loss, coupled with extremely loud screeching tinnitus. I felt as if I was in a (very loud) glass jar under water. Hearing people or atmosphere sounds like the television was so awful; everything and everyone seemed so far away. And the tinnitus was terrible. Unbearable. I felt as if I would lose my mind. I saw an ENT/audiologist who confirmed that I had significant hearing loss and said there was nothing that could be done. Over time, the hearing loss improved. I would guess that it's settled somewhere between 20-30% loss now and is mainly mid-range tones. But the tinnitus has persisted.
After sleepless nights and misery for over a year, I adapted to it and it seemed to have gotten slightly better, though only slightly. I learned tune it out when there were other sounds to distract me from it, but in a quiet room it could still drive me nuts. Then, in early 2014, I fell ill again. I've spent the year afflicted with one flu/virus after another, and the tinnitus has gotten worse and worse along the way. The constant high pitched ringing is nonstop, 24/7, in both ears, and it seems to be getting louder by the day now. Once more I cannot sleep, and it is driving me crazy. When this began three years ago, after my initial 2-pill dose from the a-pack, the pharmacist and doctors said this reaction is extremely rare, but that it can lead to total hearing loss. I highly advise anyone who develops hearing issues after a dose of this medication to cease taking it immediately. I genuinely think that if I had taken a second dose, I would have lost my hearing entirely. Zithromax is the worst thing that has ever happened to me. Proceed with extreme caution. And please post here if you find any solutions, as this condition is miserable.
Did you get relief from the ringing? If so, what was it that wound up helping you?
Hoping, wondering if anyone has found any relief? My brother has been suffering similar symptoms from steroid medicine that he took. Constant ringing and no sleep. All he does is see doctors and is very depressed, this has been going on over a year now. I'm trying to help, please help me help him. Thanks!
I'm having the same problem! I just finished my 5 day course of zithromax and for a few days now I have crazy constant loud/ringing noises in my left ear! Its literally driving me insane. Has your ringing decreased at all yet?
no it hasn't. it's in both my ears.and i sometimes have sharp or jabbing pains in my ears also.i sometimes feel like my balance is off and feel dizzy or light headed.and feel aslight head ache ,preasure and burning in the top of my head.my husband also took back to back doses of the z- pak and having the same problem but not as severe as mine.i have researched the z-pak on line and its side affects and all these are listed although they are supposed to be rare.we are also feeling very tired ,weak and fatiged at times.im trying to find out if there is an antidote or something we can take or do to counter act this medicine.if you find out please let us know.in the mean time we will pray for you as we hope you will for us .this is a horrible way to feel. and scarey.thank you for your reply.
Last night I bought some Lipo-flavonoid Plus at wal-mart, I will let you know how it works. It was $25 but I'm desperate at this point! The pharmacist told me that it works and to give it a few days.
