Tramadol is a synthetic opioid and is addictive which may be why you need increasingly higher doses to get the same effect.
Is your doctor prescribing this medication and are they aware that you're taking these higher doses?
You may need to slowly taper off the drug under your doctor's supervision to prevent withdrawal symptoms and then discuss other more safer treatment options.

I've been taking it for > 4 years, initially for arthritic pain, then after finding it effective against depression, continued with it, to alleviate destructive moods. BUT! as a general rule I have never had to exceed 1 x 50mg dose EVERY SECOND day. And it still works for me. I occasionally go off it for a cpl of days, or longer just to check if I'm developing an addiction.
I have never experienced withdrawal symptoms with this regimen.
My elevated mood continues onto the 2nd 'no dose' day, and surprisingly, the off days are occasionally more pleasant than the 'on days'.
When I say "pleasant" I'm not referring to euphoria as such, I just feel like a normal person should feel.
Maybe my body chemistry is different from others, but this works for me, and having at one stage experimented with a double dose, or one every day, I did not find it necessary, as it did not enhance the effects for me beyond 50mg/second day method.
