I've read that the eyes are numbed for injection. I am going to have to make a decision about rx for MDA. The injections seem the most promising.
However, I'm wondering if the eyes are really numbed, and what happens post injection re pain. Since these are apparently monthly injections I'm not sure if I would actually continue with the treatment if they are very painful... every month. For how long does one have to get these injections?
Thanks!

I'm on year 4 with wet ARMD, pretty much with monthly injections of Eylea. I also had to go to John's Hopkins (Wilmer Eye Institute) for PDT treatments. I've learned each doctor has their own protocol - for instance, my regular retinal specialist uses numbing drops, a numbing injection, and the Eylea injection. The doc at Wilmer uses a numbing gel and the Eylea shot (no numbing injection).
One additional comment - each person's pain tolerance is different, so in my opinion, asking a group of folks if something hurts won't answer if it will hurt YOU. Good luck with your treatment. I've gone as long as 10 months without an injection, but now I'm back on monthly injections again. Sigh... it's a frustrating disease!
No .Shots in your eye do not hurt at all. Your doctor will put multiple eye drops in your eye to numb it before the injection. Don't be afraid. Its painless. I have had three shots in my right eye.No pain.
These injections are not painful at all. The do use numbing drops. The only thing you feel is a bit of pressure, no pain. You do feel like your eyes/eye is the irritated for a few hours afterwards. Use Tears to keep moisture in eyes. I go to retina doc once a month but seems I need injection every other month. I am given Avastin. There is a class action lawsuit against 3rd party packaging of this drug. Google it for more information. I hope my answer helps you.
I have been receiving injections monthly for a year for macular degeneration. My retina specialist is awesome! I have never felt anything at all during injections. Immediately following the visit I take two Tylenol and use Systane eye drops. My eye is sometimes a little sore for about 48 hours but easily relieved with Tylenol. I use Systane 2 or 3 times a day every day. I have low tolerance for pain so I could never endure this if it hurt! I get numbing drops two times, then a numbing injection which I do not feel, then the injection itself. I hope this helps you decide to fight this terrible disease. Good luck!
They will use special numbing drops before the injection. It will be the same kind of numbing drops they use before LASIK surgery so you wont feel anything except, maybe, some pressure, but no pain. There is very little "post injection pain" so no worries there. As far as length of time to get them, it depends on which drug they are using.
Thanks so much! Whew. Now I just have to figure out cost. Benefit and Risk and all that jazz. Do you happen to know, aside from the antioxidant supplements, are they any other recommendations re. lifestykle. LIke, should I spend hours on the computer?
My mother had several treatments in her right eye without pain. But the next three shots were in the left eye and she reported that it felt exactly like a needle being stuck in her eye and she was out of commission with an ice pack on her eye all day. The 2nd and 3rd treatments were the same level of pain. The numbing drops were administered. The doctor had no explanation except to say the kit he uses on her costs $200... but there is a $2000 kit that her insurance does not cover and maybe those needles are smaller? He did not know. I know without treatment mom goes blind but I can't expect her to have excruciating pain every week
Bull I get monthly shots and they HURT. I have never just felt pressure. And, it jiets usually for a long time after. Today is the first shot that seems to be better. This nurse out it lots of numbing gel. I am going to make sure I get a lot next time. I usually just test in nes for a few hours because of the pain
