Hi,
I have MS and i just finished an my first IV course of 1g for 3days of methylprednisolone for a flare. My question is, how long does it take for my immune system to return to normal after this? For example, i know i need to avoid possible infection sources, but... for how long after these 3 days do i need to be paranoid about germs? 1 week? 2 weeks?
Sorry no one answered yet. The medication solumedrol is given before an infusion to reduce the chance of an allergic response. Even for another type of steroid.
When receiving steroids by an IV you will have a quick response to the immune system to shut down. Then your body will slowly get rid of the medication. You will be watched for signs of success. If good you will end up with later IV treatments. How fast it disappears depends upon the dose received. If you know the actual dose, you can call a pharmacy. Otherwise it is best to contact the doctor. Since we are our own advocates be sure to write down the response to the question. A friend with MS can become confused at times and she finds it helpful to do this. I do too. You can also check with your doctor or talk with the nurse before the next IV treatment. I do hope it helps you. Hope it provides relief for you.
