Junkchuk is absolutely right. I've been taking lasix for over a year for ankle swelling. 80mg daily. When taken with food, it has NO EFFECT!!! Taken on an empty stomach, it works as intended and helps to keep my ankle swelling down. I don't care what the literature says. My doctor agrees. I have CHF.
I wanted to edit this answer, but don't know how. It should read Lasix has LESS effect when taken with food.
While the documentation with my Lasix says it can be taken with or without food, I have found that the drug is much more effective taken on an empty stomach. I monitor my fluid intake and outflow down to the ounce, and have found that the result of the drug is almost negligible if taken after eating. My best result is to take it an hour before meals. I wake up, take the pill with only about 2 ounces of water, and wait until I need to urinate urgently. That way I'm sure I've digested the medicine. Then I have breakfast. In the afternoon, I take the pill about an hour before eating, which is easy since my problem is sodium retention and I manage it largely by cooking from scratch--so basically I take the pill before I start cooking.
With food
Lasix can be taken without regard to food, it makes no difference.
