I have tried this road before but my anxiety I think got the better of me so I stopped. Well here I am again trying lamitical again and I have a sore throat. So I am scared that it's caused by the meds. Can anyone share with me if they had a sore throat while starting this or any other systoms they may have experienced that went away and after how long?
I need to stick this out as I have been on 15 different ad and nothing seems to be working so something's got to give.
I had a headache this morning but went away after taking just 1 Tylenol. This is my 3rd day at 25mg and after 7 days will take 25mg 2 times a day
Staying hopeful to at least try this out for 30 days this time since nothing else seems to work
Lamictal - Is it normal to get a sore throat when starting lamitcal ?

Hi, Anon!
"Common Lamictal side effects may include: Fever, sore throat, runny nose"
"Very common (10% or more of users): Fever (15%), dry mouth, sore throat"
I've been taking lamotrigine (Lamictal) for over five years and added to my various other psych meds
it's helped me turn the corner.
Stick with it! Side effects generally resolve within about a week or two. It can take lamotrigine up to six weeks to become fully effective but you should start feeling improvements within a week or two as your metabolism adjusts to the medication and side effects subside.
You're on a low initial dosage and you will probably need to increase your dosage in the near future.
BTW, I take 100mg/day.
Hi, I just started Lamotrigine. I took it for three days and called my doctor because beginning in the first evening after I started taking it, I was developing a sore throat. No other super uncomfortable or concerning side effects, other than some fleeting chest discomfort and neck stiffness/aches. Those went away, but the sore throat kept on. I checked my throat with a flashlight and I have a white patch on one side. I figured that was the case because it felt similar to the last time I had a throat sickness with those patches. I'm still a bit worried to be honest, but I called my doctor and they told me I should discontinue. Maybe I should have stuck it out, as it looks like most people who experienced a sore throat didn't have dangerous health effects and it went away after awhile, but since I read the potential side effects and was concerned about where the sore throat was mentioned, I was too anxious to let it go. I often overreact to physical sensations, but I didn't want to risk ignoring that blood disorder warning. We'll see what happens from here
Be sure to wash it down with a good amount of liquid, don't let it dissolve
in your mouth.
Thank you, i normally take it with a full bottle of water. I drink a lot of water everyday.
Hello Wger,
This is the info I found on this site:
Seek emergency medical attention if you have: fever, sore throat, swelling in your face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain, followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling.
I've never had this symptom since I started taking it 7 yrs. ago, but that means nothing compared to how you feel. I believe you need to contact your doc asap. Why take chances? Your worthy of more than ignoring your a sore throat.
This question will benefit all of us who take Lamictal. Thanks.
L,
Anna
Thank you, I did read up on it already and even though it says sore throat but not that it is a bad reaction. So it is a little tricky. Since it only started on my 3rd day I am going to try to see what happens at least the first week. Although if it get worst or any other signs I will call the doctor ASAP. You are right that I need to take care of myself and can never be to cautious but I also have to try not to let my anxiety get the best if me.
Thank you again
Sore throat can be a side effect. I had a sore throat for the first week or so that I was on it.
Thanks I really needed to hear that, I'll wait a week. Last time I think I made it at least 6 days lol but I was scared to death of getting the rash. Which even though I visited the dermatologist And didn't have a rash. Lol I remember though I did get a sore throat back them as well so i am trying to be realistic that it just a side effect that will go away and I need to at least give it time to. Thank you do much for your help
kaismama did you have any other problems when starting. I just want to know if there are any other normal or systoms that other people may have experience to help me. I really need to not give up.
My doctor who has been very patient and understanding with me :) want me to take 25 mg for one then 25 mg 2x a day until I see him again which is not for a month. I am not sure if he keeping me at 50mg or what ? Being that the therapeutic dosage is 100mg it seems odd.
Any information that you can provide to get me though this bump would be greatly appreciate
