crave a cup of coffee when I wake up in the morning. I also really dislike waking up and drinking a glass of water. Are we supposed to take Fosamax upon awaking to be certain that we have an empty stomach? What if I have coffee and breakfast and then not eat or drink for at least seven hours. Then take the Fosamax late in the afternoon with a glass of water, wait 30 minutes, and then have dinner. Is there a reason other than an empty stomach that requires us to take the med upon awaking? If taking it the way I'm suggesting is OK, am I able to drink water during the day? Thanks for any advice you can give me.
I am supposed to take Fosamax once a week, but I find that I frequently stop taking it because I?

I too hate having to hold off on coffee etc. Here is what works for me: As soon as I get up I take my weekly Fosamax with a bit of water. Then I use my favorite coffee cup and heat up the water. Some how drinking hot water tricks my brain to think... mmmm coffee... well, not quite! Now I set my timer for 30 mins. and slowly make my coffee knowing it will be ready when the timer goes off. Then I distract myself with whatever. This seems to work with craving coffee first thing! Just in case you are fasting all day until you have reached 7 hours, or whatever, you might be struggling to not eat or drink for long stretch and you have to work with your mind, so work with your mind in the morning instead of all day thinking you can't eat or drink. Fasting can be good on occasion, but all the time? Not so sure! Hope this helps!
Ideally it's best taken in the morning but if you want to have coffee, etc and would like to not eat anything during the day then it would work. It's a good idea not to even drink water at least 4 hours before taking the dose.
Thanks for your response. I've done this a few times now (including today) and it works a lot better for me. The tricky part is making sure I don't accidentally eat or drink something during the day. So far, I haven't slipped up. I've avoided water also just to be on the safe side. Thanks again.
I can not take anything with water first thing in the morning so I have not been taking my.fosmax. I will wait fours hours after coffee to take pill. Will this be effective?
For the person who wants to drink coffee and take Fosamaz four hours later, I found this info on www.everydayhealth.com.

Q: When a medicine is to be used on an empty stomach, is black coffee okay to drink or is it considered a food? A: It is important to take certain medications on an empty stomach first thing in the morning because the absorption can be decreased by calcium, iron, fiber and other substances. If you use cream or milk in your coffee, the calcium may interact with these drugs. Recent studies have shown that even coffee itself might reduce the absorption of the medication. For more detailed information, consult with your physician or pharmacist for guidance based on your specific condition and current medications.
Note from Karen: Hopefully someone on Drugs.com who is more knowledgeable will answer your question. I think if you put milk or sugar in the coffee, they might be considered more like foods, and four hours might not be enough time before taking Fosamax. I'll bet there are a lot of people not taking their Fosamax because they can't handle swallowing a pill with a big glass of water first thing in the morning! I'm still eating/drinking in the morning, and then waiting seven hours with no food or drink before taking Fosamax. It's a pain though, and I think I may just try to get used to taking the Fosmax first thing in the morning--ugh! Good luck!
