Had the same problem with the other statins, muscle aches stopped after about a week after discontinuing. Lipitor worked for me for over a year before problem started. I developed the side effect in July and I still have severe muscle and joint pain. Doctor told me blood test normal and it wasn't the lipitor but can't tell me what the cause is. Anybody else have this experience?
How long does muscle pain as a side effect last after discontinuing lipitor (statins)? I have 2 mnth

Does anyone have hip and buttock pain? It’s so severe I cry all night long wanting to cut off from hip down. The spasms/cramping feels like the worlds worse charly horse that won’t come out. I’m miserable, nothing for pain or muscle relaxants help. I decided after ready this to stop Lipitor just to see if it’s the culprit and I got my first night sleep in years! I really thought I was going insane y’all. Thanks to everyone
Kim
@kimvog, yes, I have hip and buttock pain. I put the pieces together myself and stopped statins yesterday. My pain is not as severe as yours, but I have had trouble sleeping because of the discomfort. What tipped me off was, I ran about 100 yards a couple days ago and my lower leg muscles, the ones on the front side of the calves, were as sore as if I had walked 4 miles. Crazy. This weekend, I couldn't shop because when I looked down the weight of my head made my neck sore. I'm praying it goes away.
@Belue has your pain subsided?
@BRIDOG70, I'm happy to say that yes, my pain subsided within a week or less. Went on a 1/2 hour hilly bike ride (which I don't often do) and have no sore muscles. Yesterday I went on my weekly 2 hour horseback ride, which has left my inner thighs sore for the past 6 months, and I'm not sore at all! Hope that others experience the same.
In EVERYBODY'S case, it's the statins! I tried four different ones over a period of nearly five years following quad bypass. My cholesterol then, later, and now wasn't that high, but cardioman wanted it rock bottom! My pain began early in the first few months, mostly calves and biceps, but in general all over. I'm finishing 470 sessions of voluntary cardio rehab this week (43 months with perfect attendance until had to have carotid cleaned out), and each and every session on the ellipticals has been agony.
I have fallen down repeatedly for these years when calf muscles cramp and desert me. I have to use one arm to lift the other up to turn off the light. I stopped pravastatin in April and began giving myself horribly expensive injections in the stomach(!) of Repatha, giving the statins time to drain out of my body. NO SUCH LUCK! I think either it's permanent, that I've injured a different set of muscles with the way I've had to move for five years, or it's fibromyalgia now.
Statins are POISON and don't let any pharmacist or doctor tell you what a small percentage of patients suffer muscle pain from them... ask around a lot and listen to the dozens and dozens of people who were prescribed them, had terrible agony, and just quietly stopped them. Bet THEY don't go into their statistics. I'm so sorry I didn't find a natural solution. Even a shorter life might have been better than one in constant pain. Cheerful, aren't I? Also very militant. If you start to hurt, look for another solution!
Have a conversation with your physician. It may be myositis?
I am sorry to tell you - i have been off my Crestor ,similar to Lipitor, medication for 1 year and still have days with severe arm and kneck pain. Incidentally my last cholesterol check was 3. 9 without any of these drugs. My doctor is amazed. It is a little hard to achieve though and does take a lot of self discipline though.
I have been on Lipotar for about 18 months now. Started to experience terrible pain in my thighs in April. I had put on some weight so thought that was the culprit but when I finally mentioned it to my doctor she felt it was the lipitor. I stopped the drug about 1 month ago but I still have really bad days. Is there any way we can go after the manufacturer for this... my life has been seriously compromised by this drug.
I discontinued atorvastatin 2 weeks ago after 10 months of taking it and still have severe pain in legs and knees. I hope it goes away soon.
Hi Murphy,
I’ve spent 1/2 hour researching this topic because I also have pain and are on statins.
I went off for 18 mo without change.
I was diagnosed then with fibromyalgia.
There was no definitive answer I could find. Patient stories had 6 months to 2 years listed.
I have a lot of info about statins. If you or anyone wants to go into this subject, I will gladly share it just let me know.
Best wishes
:-)
I told my doctor that i have leg cramps after the statins which was a while ago I was on them. He thought it was not them. I do not believe him. Because I have never had this before i took them
How long did I it take to get better. I stopped them 2 months ago and still leg and joint pain. Doctor things it’s not the statins. But before I started them I never had a problem
The suffering is something I can’t even explain. After reading all of the horror stories on here I too stopped taking my Lipitor and last night was the first night I’ve slept pain free in my hips and buttocks for years!
Had the same muscle pain. Told Doc. Stopped the med. Still having pain. Didn't think to ask him if, and how long it would take to get better. Has anyone gotten better after stopping the med?
I've been taking Lipitor for six months.
Well 3 months ago my right arm felt like the bone was on fire. Now it's my thigh and it's the worst. I just googled here and am glad others have experience this. I thought I had bone cancer the pain is horrible
I have been on Crestor for years and now have stopped. After 5 months and I still have severe muscle pain. Not too sure what happens now, maybe it will go away in time but, I am an impatient person and expect wonders in no time - now we wait.
Sorry to have to say this. I have been off cholesterol medication Crestor for 1 year, I have now even worse pain in both my shoulders and arms. Another side effect is that I have neuropathy as well. I believe it to have been caused by "Crestor"
I know it was 2011 and know it is 2018. Are you feeling ok. I started statins a year ago and different ones and been off of them 3 months and having ankle and wrist pain and lower arm and leg pain and aching muscles
I hope this goes away. Sick from them. My primary doctor is doing blood work to see what is going on. But he thinks it’s not the statins.
Still have extremely bad muscular/arthritis in my shoulders and right thumb area also my lower back.
It certainly has not got better, worse now.
I took Crestor for one day. I had such severe leg cramps, I had to take a bath.
I am wondering if this is still the case for you, rkeenanjr. I had pneumonia in February, and as the symptoms of it subsided, I started getting severe pain in my shoulder and knee joints, as well as upper arm and thigh muscles. I've been on Lipitor for years with no ill effects, but my doctor suspects it as the culprit. I've been 3 weeks off it, with only partial improvement. Wish I knew what to expect and what to do next. It is a very helpless feeling.
i've been on lipitor for 6 years started having really bad pain in my arm went to the ER I thought I was s having a heart attack but it was'nt then afew days later started having very painful thigh cramps and bone aches that been more than a month ago and it still going on my doctor put me on pravastatin it has the same side effects and i'm still in pain and don't know what to do.
I have been taking Lipitor for about one year. It has lowered my cholesterol but now I have severe muscle pain in my neck and shoulders. It is so severe that pain killers won't eliminate the pain. So I discontinued the Lipitor and I am getting a drastic reduction in pain after two days of discontinuance. The program "House Call " on Fox & Friends on Sunday mornings at 10:30 AM said that this muscle pain occurs in 15% of users and should be discontinued immediately. They said to switch to Red Yeast Rice as an alternative solution. This supplement can be purchased at any health food store.
Red Rice Yeast has natural lovastatin in it so if you have reactions from statins then you should not take red rice yeast either.
Thank you.
I am sorry you are going through that. I too had to stop taking Statins because of severe muscle pain. I tried Crestor and the next day my legs hurt so bad, I had to take a bath. I also went to a Nutrition Store for Red Yeast Rice. They said that if the other Statins caused pain, there was a good chance the Red Yeast could. I didn't buy it. Just saying
Not having the problem, but from what I understand, the damage can be permanent. I certainly hope not in your case. You can research the drug at the top of the page under Drugs A to Z. Good luck to you...
