Someone in my family has been given a prescription of Wellbutrin to help him quit smoking. Does anyone know how this works and is there anything that should be watched for? Side effects, reactions etc...

I have been on Wellbutrin for about 2 years for anxiety and depression. I'm a smoker and it didn't make me quit but it has helped me slow WAY down
I have been prescribed Wellbutrin to quit smoking after asking my dr because i've seen it work for my mom. I was a pack a day smoker ( who loves smoking) and I have seen results. I've been taking it for 3 days;
Day 1: floating sensation & slight irritation. Dropped my cravings down significantly. Noticed that when I would smoke, out of habit, I didn't get the pleasure and they tasted funny. Smoked less.
Day 2: almost the same as effects as day 1 except sever agitation but less floating/dizziness in the morning. I only smoked 4 cigs all day. Found myself putting them out after only a few drags.
Day 3: best day so far. Less floating feeling and have actually forgotten about smoking for 7 hrs... Which is unheard of in my life of routines... I've smoked 4 today but have yet to get the pleasure/buzz I'm waiting for. I'm smoking out of habit.
I used to leave work to smoke... During my 10 min outing I would smoke 2 and now I find myself forgetting to leave. The hardest urge is not continuing my routine. I think I'd be QUIT if the urges weren't so strong to "continue my routine". Guess "will power" is going to have to break the habit and routine. Hope this helps.
I was about a 10 cigg a day smoker, more on the weekends and smoked for 20 years (age 16 to 36). My OBGYN prescribed Wellbutrin to quit smoking (I was not depressed). This was my first attempt to quit and it worked, that was 8 years ago and I am still not smoking. It was so strange how I didn't think about smoking, Wellbutrin just took that thought right out of your brain and I had no cravings. I took the low dose for about 2 months and about a month into it I didn't want to smoke anymore. The ciggs tasted funny and eventually I didn't want to smoke anymore. Wellbutrin made me "floaty" but I still went to work everyday at my full time office job. I had no suicidal thoughts at all and was in a happy mood everyday. I highly recommend at least trying the low dose of this to see how it goes. We just buried my cousin at the age of 62 from lung cancer due to smoking. God gave me one life to live and my children mean to much to me to give it up for cigarettes. Good luck to everyone who tries.
I have taken wellbutrin in the past. I was not ready to quit smoking so I stopped. Now I am back on it. Both times I noticed I increased smoking from say 10 cigs a day to a full pack. By day 5 in the past at least I was done. I tried a cig on day 6 in the past and I threw up. Finally by day 7 cravings were gone. I was on it for 10 days then stopped. This time around I want to quit. So I am placing full effort into this. I am having the same issues as before. I know I will be done by day 5.
I recently started taking Wellbutrin to help me quit smoking and for depression. After 5 of taking it I have only smoked 2 cigarettes, and both times I felt ill afterwards. I am having negative side effects, such as a dizzy, floaty feeling, but that seems to be lessening. My depression is slowly lifting and I feel like this will work in the long term. Remember, whenever you start a new medication like this you are bound to have an adjustment period. don't give up:)
This is my second day on Wellbutrin for quitting smoking and I'm still smoking a lot! Hopefully it will be better tomorrow!
Well my doctor prescribed me Welbutrin for my mood. and i was a smoker and i loved smoking.. i didnt smoke ALOT like 6-7 ciggs a day and i enjoyed it... after a while i noticed id go whole days with out smoking or only have one and i thought something was wrong with me bc i have been smoking since i was very young and when i did smoke it was nasty and when i tried to smoke 2 in the same night i almost threw up. i was good at smoking at first on it but outa no where i dont crave it no more. im kinda pissed bc i didnt wanna quit but i guess this was what was best...
I have been taking Wellbutrin for about 4 weeks now as an anti-depressant. I had little desire to stop smoking cigarettes. I have noticed within the past week or so that I have little desire to smoke. I realized that I have been going hours between smoking cigarettes. I used to smoke around 10 cigarettes a day. Now a pack is last me 3-4 days. And a lot of times I will light a cigarette, take a puff, and simply put it out. I have little desire to smoke. It seems to me that I light a cigarette simply out of habit. When I run out of cigarettes I'm not gonna buy anymore and see what happens. I don't believe I'm gonna want anymore. I haven't noticed that the cigarettes taste bad. They taste the same to me. I simply don't want them.
Hi I was prescribe Wellbutrin to help me quit smoking and my doctor said it would help with my mood too. When I don't have a smoke I am a very nasty person. But my only worry is that I see that other people taking wellbutrin have had issues with their mood and have had suicidal thoughts. Should I be worried about this? I really want to quit smoking I just dont like my side effects of quiting smoking.
I've been on Wellbutrin for a week and a half now and I am pleased and surprised by its effectiveness. It makes cigarette smoking less desirable.
I don't know how it works biologically but it does. The best way I can sum it up is that it lifts your mood in general and therefore, at least in my experience, I had less need and less desire for my vises.
Tell your friend to not expect immediate results but within a few days he'll notice a change. The second day on it was almost bad for me, he'll experience a kind of spacey-ness, almost a detached feeling like floating. It was weird and it almost made me second guess taking it but then the next day I felt a bit better. T
hen by the end of the first week I felt good and found myself forgetting about smoking.
I would recommend it to anyone.
Hi, can someone tell me how long it took until the cigs started tasting bad and you just didn’t want them anymore. I have been on the Wellbutrin almost 5 days and still smoking with no difference. Just to note I am taking it for depression, the quitting smoking would be a bonus. Thanks in advance.
i am about to get on wellbutrin..to quit smoking mainley..and perhaps help me with my depression and anxiety..lol not funny..anyway..thanks people.
ill let you all know how it go's..with side effects and such.
I too will be taking Wellbutrin/patch tomorrow. I will also be using the Wellbutrin as an anti-depression. As I understand from my Dr. the Wellbutrin is to make smoking very unpleasent. I believe that it can work because my friend started taking the Wellbutrin about six years ago for his depression and he quit smoking after about two weeks and never went back. So while I am fine with the smoking cessation I do have issues with the side-effects. I will be talking to my Dr. tomorrow and will let you know what side-effect she says may occur.
Wellbutrin decreased the pleasure I got from smoking. Unfortunately, I started smoking again several years later.
I agree w/ the last two comments about the aggitation. Its horrible and I am going to go off it, its that bad. Its too bad because it helped with my depression. I honestly don't think its worth taking, find something else to help you quit. The worst is in the beginning (for the agitation) and sometimes it goes away, in my case it did not. Its your call, and maybe you won't get any side effects. It did give me more energy and was able to get up in the morning with no problem. Some people get insomnia, but I did not. I hope this helps! Good luck.
I recently read of a program that combines Wellbutrin and nicotine patches. This sounds like it would really work for me. I am about to try this combination. Wellbutrin in the past helped me quit smoking because it takes away the pleasure while you are smoking the cigarette. The patches would help you not crave a cigarette. I did not notice the aggitation, etc. I am getting my wellbutrin today, so I will post any side effects I experience. The program I am trying is Dr. OZ's Kick the Habit Plan As far as the comment about taking mind altering drugs to help you quit smoking... its worth it to me, and I dont have to stay on Wellbutrin long term.
Wellbutrin works as an anti-depressant as well as for some reason smoking cessation...
I'm a smoker and my dr. prescribed the Wellbutrin 300 mg... daily... for my depression.
I wasnt trying to quit but it works, I used to enjoy smoking, wasnt looking to quit, I mean, I was depressed, the last thing I cared about was cancer... (I'm a jokester, sorry)...
It makes the cigarette taste NASTY and you really dont think about having one...
If you are TRYING to quit it will work like a charm...
I dont know why it works on smoking cessation but I think it has to do with the nicotine cravings, it makes the body not look for it... weird... but for some reason I cant find the justification of being on a mind-altering drug to quit smoking...
I have noticed I lost 5 lbs. since starting wellbutrin...
Have no desire to eat, nothing looks good to me..
SIDE EFFECTS FOR ME:
AGITATION... I really dont have the patience for the slightest of things and that's not cool, being depressed is bad enough, I dont need any help being aggravated...
MUSCLE ACHES: Maybe it's a coincidence but I've had back/neck pain since starting it, it's really uncomfortable. Dr. said that I may be tensing my muscles more without realizing it and causing the muscle pain... WHATEVER, it still hurts
Oh, did I mention AGITATION!!! LOL I'm even annoyed while typing this note, listening to my obnoxious/inconsiderate office neighbor blabber about her 2 stupid kids that nobody cares about.
I understand your aggitation. sucks really because it's the only anti depressent i've found that works for depression for me. it has to do with dopamine re-uptake inhibition. the others deal with seritonin and norepinephrine. my problem is dopamine and that is from years of opiate addiction. Anyway it works, not depressed but boy am i aggitated! i can't uncurl my toes, my stomach is constricted in a knot and the smallest thing really aggrivates me. i can't deal with that either. so what else is there? have you discovered a possible fix for this Shamegirl? I'll look into it also
i know its been like 7 years on this topic... but i just took a wellbuterin today... i instantly felt a rush and now im a lil tired... i too had a bout with opiates and i swear i think it hurt my brain... i really hope this works for me but i am a bit worried about agitation since short temper is and always has been a problem for me... thanx... tishi
Ive been taking Welburtrin Extended Release for almost 4 months. I was prescribed 150mg once daily, the 1st 3 days it made me sleepy so i had to take it at night by the end of the 1st week I felt less depressed, more energized and craved cigarettes less and less everyday. Nine days after starting the med I noticed my anxiety was getting worse, worse than before i started the Wellbutrin. By the 3rd week smoking or even smelling cigarettes made me feel sick to my stomach the only time i wanted to smoke was when i was anxious i also had no desire to eat. Ive lost 12lbs in 4 months and no longer smoke. I get agitated quite easily when Im anxious and now I have bouts of depression and some days feel I could punch any and everybodies face in for no reason at all. I would recommend Wellbutrin if u want to stop smoking but would not recommend it if u have anxiety.
