I stopped taking it and my anxiety came back because of a lot of triggers, or it was always there but got worse. so I started taking it again.
it is the only pill I am taking. one pill is 25mg and I take half at night, but I am irritated and sleepy the whole day. I have anxiety because of all the deadlines and these pills make it very hard for me to focus, but it helps me to sleep and manage anxiety (thoughts, fast heart bit, constant worrying) is this gonna go away or should I further reduce the amount I am taking? my appointment with the doctor is in 2 months, I don't know what to do
I suffer from anxiety and Atarax was prescribed to me 4 years ago.

That’s a great question. I’ll be honest, I was once prescribed Atarax and the more I took it, the more I needed to take. I started at 25mg, after a few weeks I was up to 100mg. It basically made me tired and sleepy all the time, which I complained to my doctor about. As my doctor told me at the time, “would you rather be anxious or a little sleepy?” I don’t think it is an effective drug for long term anxiety relief, But if it’s all you have, and you don’t see your doc for two more months, you’re going to have to make it work. Maybe try taking 25mg earlier in the day. You’re going to have to experiment a little bit on different times and doses. I think half a 25mg dose may be causing more side effects than relief. So I’d try the full 25mg and try to find a time in the day where it helps the best. You’re also going to have to start taking it regularly so your body can get used to it, which may help you be less irritable. Maybe try taking two 25mg doses a day several hours apart. While you wait to see your doctor, research different (and better medications) for anxiety: Buspirone has worked great for me, for the body issues with anxiety like fast heart beat, sweating, etc, propranolol works great in low dosage. Obviously the best medications for anxiety relief are benzodiazepines, but due to their addictive nature, many doctors no longer prescribe them. In my opinion formerly prescribed Atarax, Atarax is on level with Benadryl, just makes you sleepy. We are different, and I hope this helps a little bit. Good luck to you!
