My doctor also said weight gain also. I know about that one.But does any body know someone who have gotten diabetes, from taking this medicine. Is the status of catching diabetes from this medication high. I used to take geodon, but that medication made me feel like a zombie.I also was taking geodon, for the sleep issues. It put me to sleep about 30 mins. After i took it.I also told my doctor that, i wanted to take seroquel for that. I also told him that it can calm you down if you suffer from some anxiety. He said no it doesn't, now i don't believe him when he said that.I took it about 7 years ago briefly, and i wasn't as nervous. As i was the night before.
I heard my doctor say you can get diabetes, from taking seroquel. Is this right, who out there did?

I take seroquel, and yes it can cause diabetes.
Signs of diabetes, such as high blood sugar, increased thirst, frequent urination, or extreme hunger.
Endocrine
A study of U.S. military veterans with schizophrenia has reported that patients on quetiapine (the active ingredient contained in Seroquel) had 3.34 times as many cases of diabetes when compared to patients taking decades old drugs for psychosis including haloperidol, thioridazine, and others.
Additional studies have confirmed that patients receiving atypical antipsychotics (i.e., clozapine, risperidone, olanzapine, quetiapine, ziprasidone) are at an increased risk of developing hyperglycemia and/or diabetes mellitus.
Treatment with quetiapine has been shown to cause significant decreases in total serum thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) levels and a significant increase in thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels after 6 weeks of therapy.
Endocrine side effects have included hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus, and hyperthyroidism. Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) has also been associated with quetiapine use.

I suggest you watch your diet, and have constant blood work ordered by your prescriber/psychiatrist.
That's really interesting! I'm on Seroquel and didn't know that. Thanks!
You are welcome Delila.-
Hi Maso, i know this is an old post but the other day, i came inside (after having a cigarette) and felt like i was having a 'hypo', had to sit down, no energy and hands were feeling a bit numb/pins & needles. I've had this before, but this time my neck and shoulder muscles were really tense, painful, and someone i was with asked if i have diabetes? Do you think i should mention this to my doctor? Thanks, D
Hello Delila, yes mention this to your Dr., everything that you experience your Dr. must know about (mental and physical).
Have a ChristmasX-mas
You too! Thanks : )
I suggest anybody taking a drug like seroquel or zyprexa eat frozen yogurt everyday. I've been on these drugs for years and I swear by the frozen yogurt. I've been told it regulates the blood sugar I wouldn't take any of these drugs without eating frozen yogurt everyday. In fact I think the mental health doctors are doing you a diservice by not telling all their patients on these drugs to be sure to eat frozen yogurt everyday.
Interesting comment, thank you!
Listen, this is VERY serious, I am convinced that in the very short time that I was on both Seroquel and Zyprexa, it most definitely gave diabetes (right around the corner): I looked at my shockingly high glucose levels which was elevated by both drugs and I said take me off those things. I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes quickly afterwords. It does not run in my family and it is a HUGE price to for someone suffering from insomnia!
