I was put on 150 mg xl generic version of Wellbutrin which turned out to be a miracle for me. After 3 months I began noticing excessive hair loss and had to discontinue. I tried 75mg xl and still experienced the same symptom.
I'm unsure if the generic version is what's caused it. I have health insurance and would be open to trying the brand if possible. I wonder if anyone has experienced hair loss with the brand version of Wellbutrin at any dose?
Does generic Wellbutrin xl cause hair loss?

YES! I took both name and generic... I’ve been losing my hair by the handful. THAT made me depressed! I stopped taking Wellbutrin about two weeks ago, I’m hoping it’ll stop before I’m bald!!
I decreased from dosage from 300 mg per day to 75 mg per day. (300 XL mg caused severe constipation anyway) Will I need to discontinue the drug entirely for the hair loss to stop?
Hi All,
Has anyone found any generic/brand SR/XL formulation that does not cause hair loss for us prone to it while taking Wellbutrin?
Thank you!!
It's the drug, bupropion, that can cause alopecia in a small number of users and the drug is the same in the brand and all generic formulations.
The inert (inactive) ingredients that can differ in different generics are not the culprit.
I was taking Generic Wellbutrin (Bupropion)150 mg. The wonder drug..i was feeling the best I felt in years..then..my first side effect showed up about 2 months in..it was vitiligo..my wrist area on my right had started turning light in spots.it spread to my upper hand... then my hair started thining in the front then the thinning spread. My doctor immediately tapered me off wellbutrin and put me on Trintellix. Now I have to get adjusted to a new antidepressant. I wonder what this one will cause? If it cause you anything like this..get off of it. Does anyone know how to reverse these effects,?
I experienced hair loss about a month into taking generic Wellbutrin. I too had notice how much it helped. But, after three month, a third of my hair was gone. Just not worth it, so I consulted my doctor and we’ve stopped the Wellbutrin. I’m hopeful my hair will return to normal.

B vitamins help reverse hair loss, also hydrolyzed bone broth collagen peptides (comes in powder or tablet form), hair skin & nails supplements help immensely. Hope this helps you
I was on generic Wellbutrin for almost two and a half years. I noticed hair loss about two years ago. After listening to a dermatologist on a radio show, regarding hair loss and antidepressants, I did some of my own research. I do think this medication can cause hair loss. Wellbutrin is mentioned as specifically having hair loss as a possible side effect . I have been off it completely for almost 5 weeks and I have noticed less shedding. If you feel you cannot go off the medication, you could try the brand name but speak to your doctor because it seems like this class of medication has this side effect.
See my comment above. This is an uncommon side effect of bupropion, the same active ingredient in both the brand and generic formulations. In fact, bupropion is just one of many psychotropic drugs that can cause alopecia and hair thinning.
Hi Doxiemom: I used to take Wellbutrin SR for many years. In the past I have had hair thinning and hair loss, which can come with many kinds of medications, as I have experienced off and on through the years. I found a natural supplement to take which causes my hair loss to stop, as well as new hair to regrow. I take a supplement which contains 5000 mcgs. of biotin. It is called "Hair, Skin, and Nails". It has worked wonders for me! Evening primrose oil also helps to stop hair thinning and hair loss. I can continue to take medications that might have a side effect of hair loss, because these supplements can keep my hair loss at bay. I hope this works for you, especially when Wellbutrin XL was working like a miracle for you.
Hello! Hair loss is a very uncommon side effect of bupropion, the active ingredient in Wellbutrin:
"Uncommon (0.1% to 1%): Alopecia"
It is caused by the drug not the inert ingredients in any generic formulation or the brand.
