I've been taking fluoxetine for 3 months (20mg/day) for depression. It's REALLY helping and I'm very happy with the results.
Just wondering if it's safe to have a drink while on the treatment - it seems I will have to take it for a long time (for life ?).
I did enjoy drinking once in a while and I haven't for 3 months so that I could clearly see the effects of Fluoxetine and also I wasn't sure of the interaction. I'd love to hear about your experiences. I can easily go without alcohol... but it would be nice sometimes. I'm a bit scared to try and especially I don't want to cancel the benefits of the drug.
Thanks a lot.
Fluoxetine (Prozac) and alcohol?

Hi everyone thank you so much for answering. It was my first question here and I didn't expect I would find support like that. What a nice community :)
As I imagined - and read elsewhere - people have different and opposite opinions and experiences on the topic. I knew I would not get one easy answer and actually it's great to see it reflected here.
Just to add my experience : I shared a bottle of wine with my partner last night. That's the quantity I would normally drink. I was nice. I didn't go all crazy or more drunk than usual. And this morning I feel fine, absolutely no hang over. Like normal. Success ! :) At least for this time !
I guess I'm overall very lucky that Fluoxetine works very well with me. I don't suffer any side effects (except at the beginning when my body was getting used to it I assume). And now I see I can even drink "normally".
Still I'm aware of the depressant effect of alcohol in general so I will keep it very occasional to not cancel out the benefits of Fluoxetine.
Thanks again so much for your support. All the best to all of you.

I almost always agree with Masso and WCVet. However, on this my view is somewhat different. What I hear you saying is you would like to have an occasional glass of beer, wine, or a mixed drink. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this (according to my psychiatrist and my psychologist) as long as it is in moderation, i.e., 1 or 2 at most, and only on occasion -- maybe just once on weekends. I have always done this with no problem whatsoever. Some people need the all or nothing approach, but I tend to say everybody is different and for some an occasional drink is 100% fine--- life is short, find what you can do for yourself and enjoy (or not). But all the CNS depressant stuff only means that you MAY feel the effects of alcohol a tiny bit more (or not), but it does not mean that a drink every now and then will make your medication ineffective. That's my view/experience anyway.
It's a good question. I'll probably side with others here. Looking for the buzz from alcohol, will take you off the path you are on. Try and avoid it if possible. All the best
I agree with both previous posts.
One more aspect of it all is that Prozac is an antidepressant and alcohol acts as a depressant on your Central Nervous System.
I have not had a drink since I was 33 I am 52 now, and my life without alcohol has been great, you can still go out and have a good time, a better time in my case, well we are all different.
Hi, Melalala!
There can be an interaction for users but a few have said that they can drink while taking Prozac. Best case scenario is to not drink at all.
If you want to give it a try I'd recommend that you limit yourself to a beer/wine and try it when someone is there in case you have a problem.

Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how this medicine will affect you. Your reactions could be impaired."

PS, I no longer drink at all but when I did while I was taking an antidepressant I acted like a fool and had really awful hangovers. My friends had to take my car keys.
Tyrese is right... alcohol is a central nervous system depressant and Prozac is an antidepressant. They sort of cancel each other out. and reduce the effectiveness of the medication.
Wait. What happened to the comment here?
@Tyrese.
There are several comments that have disappeared!!!
Hello,
“Drinking alcohol can increase certain side effects of fluoxetine”. Also, drinking can reduce the effectiveness of your medication. You should avoid alcohol at all cost. You are happy with the results from Prozac. Therefore, you should avoid alcohol.
