For three days now I've been having the feeling I'm not getting enough oxygen ... I wake up with it and go to sleep with it it last all day and has caused me to have more panic attacks
I'm consitrating on my breathing so I know I'm taking in deep breaths not hyperventilating and I'm not weezy so why do I feel this way its scarrying me to death... I also have the feeling I have to constantly swollow ... Does this happen to anyone???

This is not an anxiety attack. This is caused by the muscles around your lungs being tense and not relaxing. These muscles are supposed to relax with every exhale. This can be caused by stress, anxiety or something as simple as a slightly stuffed up nose or from suckling in your gut, trying to look thin. The key to making this sensation, of not getting enough air, to go away is to relax those muscles in your chest every time you exhale. This is easier said than done. Sometimes concentrating on breathing with your diaphragm instead of your chest helps but what I have found works best is breathing through your mouth and concentrating on the exhale, not the inhale. When you exhale relax your chest muscles like your are making a big relaxing sigh. Also relaxing your jaw will help and try not to puff up your chest. I hope this helps you and anyone else who reads this.

I have these same symptoms and went to the hospital urgent care. I was told I was having a panic attack. I could not stop my body from shaking, clammy hands, heavy weight on chest making it difficult to take deep breaths. I looked like a loon and felt so embarrassed! My blood pressure was sky high and at dangerous levels. This is so very bad for your body. Breathing exercises are good but sometimes not enough. I'm very happy you went to see the doctor. I hope you feel better soon.

Hey , this sounds totally familiar . I've been going insane and eventho I can breath clear and fine , I've constantly the feeling of not having enough oxygen inside my lungs . And now that you mention it , I've been sucking in my stomach and been tensing it up without even realizing it . How long did it take you to breath right and lose those symptoms of being short of breath ?? Thanks for your time already in advance , Daniel :)

How long till the symptoms went away ?

The symptoms will go away as soon as you can train your body to relax the muscles in your chest and breath with your diaphragm. This can be more difficult than it sounds but the more you practice the better you will get at it and the more you will recognize what diaphragm breathing feels like.

Thank you much for replying . I was also wondering how it started with you ? ... I would have some days here and there , usually it would come out when I got really anxious or stressed and it persisted for the remaining day . But the other day I had a dr checkup ( haven't had one in a while ) and the minute I walked in ,it started and hasn't stopped ( 3 weeks later ) it's gotten better tho . But the constant breath awareness certainly isn't helping . I notice whenever I'm alone and I don't think about it ( let my belly breath on its own , and not forced ) it's almost gone . The second I make myself aware of it again , it starts and I'm gasping for air ! It's so annoying and I hope with the right breathing technique it'll vanish soon

Being aware of you breath can make it worse because you automatically tense the muscles around your lungs when you think about not breathing enough. It can become a vicious circle. The tense muscles give you the sensation of not getting enough air. It is a reflex that happens for the same reason someone would tense up and stop breathing when hiding from someone they are scared of, trying to be quiet. I find the best thing to do is, as soon as you feel the lack of air sensation make about 3 quick breaths expelling completely, like you just went on a run. Do your best to relax the chest muscles and use your diaphragm for inhaling. Then distract yourself with other things so you are not thinking about breathing and repeat as necessary. I have dealt with this on and off my whole life. I think what triggered my problem was having childhood asthma that I grew out of. My parents told me I wasn't getting enough air for my body to function properly. This caused me to panic and cry uncontrollably. I was about 4 at the time.

I think you right, it helps a lot. I have coughs as well as shortness of breath but twice in the last week already got an attack with strong and crazy fast heart beats that lasted for about half a minute and all that helped me was concentrating on breathing the air out of my mouth as if I was respiring my self/imagining like I was connected to a respiration machine. This brought down the heart beating down really fast. First time it happened I didn't know what to do an d it also lasted longer and made me very exhausted, I was breathing very heavily and drove my self to Er which was very hard to do under this condition. I'm not sure for if me it's only an anxiety but it surly makes you anxious when you suddenly can't breath and your heart beat fly up to the roof. Try to stay calm, think positive that everything is going to be ok and that you're not afraid to die and use this technique of breathing out through your mouth while relaxing your chest muscles. Hope it helps anyone.
When I become overwhelmed, I get full blown panic attacks. I start opening Windows, turning on fans, opening doors and shedding any heavy clothing like sweaters. I feel as if stale air has invaded my space and I can't breathe. I try reasoning with myself and trying to tell myself, it's gonna be ok, it's all in my head", but the air gets thinner, my chest gets heavier and I find myself in a tanktop and socks, in the middle of winter, on my porch looking for air. I wish I had a remedy or answer to tell you how to kick it, but I can't. I am left 2 choices, 911 or handle it. Twice I went to the ER, unresponsive, and disoriented, blood pressure-dangerously high. Suffered all my life. No one ever recognized this as, "a real, true to life" disorder. You can't fake technology so when the EKG is saying your heart is beat is too hard, it's because it's real, and the BP cuff says your blood pressure is too high, it's real.
I don't need validation from anyone to know that I suffer. You are not alone! You are not faking it and you don't need to be on 13 different psychotropic drugs to prove it. Maybe what you need is some understanding, delicate voices, love, patience, attention and you might be able to lessen PA severity. I am here for you. You are a good person capable of functioning. I wish the people I loved would have said this to me. It was easier to leave. It was like erasing me. But I am still here, alone but thriving because I am determined and hopefully one day PA will stop stealing my life!

Are you on any meds just wondering I was out on a beta blocker and now I stopped it and I'm experiencing panic attacks like no other.
Hi there, I know I'm a little late, but I just came across this forum...
I've been having the same feelings, every day, it never goes away it just kind of gets manageable, but then really really intense ! Started about 3 weeks ago, I felt funny like in a dream state like nothing was real and I felt my heart pulpations, I was dizzy, brain fog, spaced out, my hands and feet went numb and I couldn't feel anything! My breathing got bad I felt like I couldn't take in a full breath! And with every breath the left dude if my upper abdomen hurt right under the heart, Scary!!
Went to the ER 5 times in the past 2 weeks, been to the dr about 3 tines, they are all saying its anxiety/panic disorder.. I wasn't convinced as o felt there was something more to it I've asked for blood work, ct scan, ecg, everything, it all comes down to anxiety, thing is I don't feel anxious! Dr put me on mirtazapine 35 mg, I couldn't take it it made me feel crazy like haulicinations, and what not, so I stopped. I'm now on venlafaxine 37.5 mg. only been on it for 2 days so I'm Not sure if it works.
It's been more than a year since you wrote this let me know if you e found answers, or solutions???
Hope everything's ok !

Hey I totally know how u were feeling. I have been dealing with anxiety for about two years now and some days are better than others. That pain in ur chest that feels like a heart attack will subside when u can down and relax sometes it can feel like for ever I remember having that pain so bad that I called an ambulance only to go to the er and get medications that made me feel horrible like suicidal so I stopped taking them they never helped me and I must have gotten like eight meds within the two years. I have learned to accept this and focus on God and not man it has helped me a lot but some days are good and some bad it can and will get better believe me. Last night I had a horrible night and I'm still awake cause my heart would not stop racing but I am hopeful I will sleep tonight.

Hi.
I have read everyone's questions here and I can tell you I have all the same symptoms. I have worked as a nurse for years in emergency room and operating room then last February out of the blue I couldn't breathe and all the same symptoms everyone has talked about here I got non stop and still have it a year later. Did all the tests and all come back negative. I know it is anxiety and panic attacks but it's so horrid to live each day with this and have to fight your way through each day . Dr gave me oxazepam which I took for a while but the side effects can also trigger more anxiety so they gave me 2mg of diazepam to help me. Nothing really works and I've seen a psychiatrist too who says I'm perfectly fine. It's all so unfair to wake up and live your life like this everyday and all you really want to do is breathe!
I have found that the anxiety made me more aware of every ache and pain where before I had anxiety I didn't notice or bother with them. So I now am trying to not listen to every ache and pain in my body and just push myself through every day. I am just hoping for the day to come where I don't have to fight to breathe and get through each day and be able to enjoy life again like I used to do. Taking medications always causes more anxiety and also makes you dependant on them which I am trying not to be so I only take a tablet when my anxiety is severe otherwise I just keep plodding along this horrible path of anxiety. Hold on people there has to be some light at the end of this tunnel for us soon. I have also taken myself away from situations which make my anxiety even worse and that does help a lot too. But you also need something to concentrate on other than think about it anxiety. I find listening to music and doing some of the things I used to do before helps accept one big thing! I cannot seem to exercise like I used to as I dont like going out of breath that causes my anxiety to kick in. Have hope my fellow sufferers we will find the fix we need at some point I believe, when I dont know but I am a believer nothing can last forever the way it goes. And yes every time I see the doctor for anything now he says " it's your anxiety and it's in your head your not sick" so you become too afraid to go to the doctor and it makes you feel so lonely and unwanted and a burden to family when you have these attacks all the time. Well that's how I feel.

Hi Linsey, I'm so sorry to hear another story like this. I have had severe Panic Disorder since I was 10 years old, but back then, the doctor's didn't know what to do. At age 27, I started taking Xanax and have now been on it for 30 years. It was a life saver! Even though I take a very low dosage, the doctors have now decided they don't want people to take this any more. But it has worked for me for 30 years, and I will continue to fight to stay on it. I would bet Xanax works for a of people who have severe panic disorder. I wish you all the best.

I am being treated for low blood presser when I stand up, this has started over a year ago while playing golf, when I hit the ball i got dizzy and had to sit down, eventualy it started at home when I got up from a sitting or laying down position. I have had 31 appointments at the VA where I seen so many doctors and very little relief, I have COPD SO IT MAKES IT worse, all my doctors tell me I have to drink more water so I drank 64 oz of water and my BP SHOT UP TO 200 OVER 115,SEAMS I drank to fast.
I now have something new happening It happened this morning for the second time, it happened last week for the first time. I woke up early in morning and breathing hard and got up and didn't know where I was and felt like in a different world and was about to die, I almost got in my car to go to hospital and kept trying to not stop breathing, this went on for about a hour, I must of past out as I woke up and every thing was normal again.I am afraid to go to sleep as it may happen again as I may not come out of it.
I have suffered from anxiety and panic for years.after reading what most of you are saying it all sounds like standard anxiety and panic symptoms. I think we tend to psych ourselves out or as I like to think too in tune with our bodies!

I have panic disorder diagnosed 1995; but had attacks for few years with no diagnosis and no help. I n mid 90s U of Texas med school ran a clinical trial for Phyzer pharmacutic to study folks who where having unprovoked Panic... finally got a name for my suffering PANIC DISORDER. 10 week study gave me free phychiatrist visits for a few weeks... put on Ativan... saved my life. Here is something to consider... have you experienced smothering as a child , perhaps? Hard to recall trauma sometimes cause we don't like to remember abuse. Like say, someone older and stronger was "teaching"you how to swim by holding your head under water; or playing and locked you in dark closet... but it was just a JOKE! Nothing funny about these things. I was informed during this study that often the brain triggers
"a SMOTHERING RESPONSE"... bringing on the I can't breathe symptoms. It's awful. Try carrying folded ,even colorful, paper bag with you.. keep one in car next to bed or wherever you need. cover nose and mouth and breathe slowly.. really helps. Cut down on caffeine. Find a real doctor. Many people self medicate with alcohol... careful with that. Hope you find respect and good treatment!
So I know I am a few months late but I have been having this for the first time for 5 days straight now with no relief unless I am sleeping! I seriously cannot cope with this! Has anyone found a fix?

I certainly know the feeling of waking up and not being able to breathe. I was on Alprazolam, Xanax for 30+ year's and also prozac. My Dr decided he was going to wean me off my alprazolam(Xanax) I was taking 4 0.5 Xanax a day. He switched me from my Xanax to clonapin. .05 s. Now I am down to 2 clonapin.05 a day. I am still having severe anxiety and panic attacks steadily. I am so freaking frustrated. I am still depressed. I have PTSD I found my husband hanging in our basement of our new home when our little girl just turned 6. Also have had cancer and many other tragedies and I am still suffering. I wish someone could help me figure out what to do about this mess I am in. Besides put a bullet in my head. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

Hey Frankie how are you holding up??? I suffer from severe OCD and yes it sucks to have a mental illness. Few months late I know!
I sometimes feel the same way when I'm away from home - work. However, when I am with my family, I don't feel any of these symptoms.. Is this anxiety?
I was diagnosed with Anemia 6 mos ago. I had my checkup last August and was advised that my hemoglobin is now stable. But I still get this feeling - am I overthinking?
Your inputs are appreciated. :)

My comment is that I have lyme and epstein Barr worrying makes it all worse but there definitely is something wrong. I am, going for a heart scan , had one when this all began with a foot twitching and terrible head rash, \ been suffering so long just found out why also I had a high strep titre
Feels so good to know I'm not the only one. I suffered from feeling like I couldn't breathe for months , it went away, and now it's back again. The last few nights, I will doze off and then wake up feeling like I can't breahte, my mouth is super dry and I freak out. It's been going on for months daily. Some days worse than others.

I have the same exact problems. I went to the doctor today and they did an ekg, chest x Ray and blood work. They said they didn't see anything and to follow up with my PCP. I feel like it's impossible to get enough oxygen. I feel like I need an oxygen tank. My symptoms do not last throughout the entire day but are especially bad at night. I'm not saying I have a major illness but something is wrong. Not having an answer as to what it is isn't helping.

that is exactly how I'm feeling right now!! happens all the time but thru phases. what i do to help is just distract myself so i don't think about it. people say its because I'm anxious and thinking about my breathing but i can feel it dissappear after a long while, while i am still focused on it. like i can feel my breathing come back to normal and still be thinking about my breathing to test if it really is my focusing on it, but i will stay relaxed still once it has passed. so i really don't know what it could be

I also wake up with panic attacks every morning I guess that's what it is. Hoping someone might have more information. I wake up around 7:38 o'clock and my heart's pounding so fast it feels like it's pounding out of my throat and I can feel it pounding in my temples. I started to get muscle spasms and I start to get this really weird feeling like out of body. My head starts to hurt really bad to get a migraine right through my eye to the back of my head. My nose gets all stuffed up for some reason and then I get like this gas reflux where I start belching cause my stomach blows up. I actually get the feeling like I'm going to die cuz I have to concentrate on my breathing because it feels like I actually forget how to breathe. Well I'm having the panic attacks I feel like I am terrified like the worst fear that you can never have.
While I'm having my attacks I sometimes have family members that don't understand and they think that I'm doing this on purpose or that I can control it. It's causing a lot of personal relationship problems. And I don't know what to do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. How can you make others understand that this is not something that can be controlled

Your symptoms suggest Anxiety but you already know that. I am a Doctor, but not a medical Doctor. I am a Psychologist, and a Hypnotherapist, but I have dealt with many patients who have your symptoms. Let me ask you a question: Do you ever wake up in the night and feel, for a few moments, that you can't move your body, or talk? It is sometimes a sign of Severe Anxiety Disorder, but you are already aware of that. As I advised someone else in this group, you should see a Psychiatrist. If your Health Insurance won't cover Psychiatry, and you can't afford to see one, then I advise you to see a M.D. who specializes in Anxiety. You can go to yelp.com, or other web sites that will help you find the Doctor you need. It sounds to me like you also have Panic Attacks, and you need Meds for that. There is a member of Anxiety groups named "kaismama", who is a Registered Nurse, and should she read, and comment on this post, I would listen to her to see if she agrees with my advise. Don't wait, as Anxiety and Panic Disorders can cause other problems.

Hi, it does sound like anxiety attacks to me. And the swallowing is another symptom. I take antidepressants and i had been trying to reduce some of my medication earlier this year. It was successful for some months, but then i suffered some stressful times and was experiencing very bad anxiety, similar to what you have described. My doctor increased one of my medications again, Citalopram, and within a couple of weeks i felt much better. I would urge you to see your doctor, who could either refer you to a psychiatrist or start you on some medication to see if it helps... i hope you are feeling better soon!

Hello, Definitely see a doctor to rule out any other medical problems but it sounds like you are having panic attacks. A couple years ago I had a problem very similar to what you are describing. Panic attacks usually only last about 15 minutes but sometimes they can repeat one after the other making them seem like they go on for days. If these are panic attacks you have several different treatment options including drug therapies and psychotherapy. When I was having panic attacks learning self-hypnosis techniques really helped me. I hope this information can benefit you. Best wishes, Rose

I just wanted to say I've had a similar problem. I went to the hospital because for 3 days in a row I felt like I couldn't breathe. They did blood work, x ray, EKG the whole work up. Finally said I was having a panic attack. That was in November. It is now January and every day I wake up all day long for two months I feel like I can't breathe. Its very scary. What do u do when u feel like this n it feels so very real but they are telling u its n your head?

Hi merrian, Panic attacks do feel really intense sometimes. When I was having them I was freaking out because I thought I was developing schizophrenia or had a brain tumor or something. Feeling like you're having a heart attack is also common among those that have panic attacks. If you want to use drug therapy for treatment I'd definitely recommend seeing a psychiatrist. General physicians can prescribe meds but a specialist will be much more familiar with the disorder and different therapies. Going to psychotherapy and learning breathing techniques can be beneficial as well. It takes some practice for them to work but focusing on taking very deep breaths when you're having a panic attack may help you. Best wishes, Rose

There is nothing without cause. If this is something you haven't experienced before, then check for hidden mold allergens, dust mites and look to environment. I have had work ups and felt horrible being a fit healthy person. They kept telling me it was all in my head and I was so frustrated. That I had anxiety and panic. Not true, I had mold in my blender I was drinking. It make me so sick, and it wasn't in my head. All my workups were normal. Many things can cause shortness of breath. Allergies, hormones, MOLD, keep looking and don't dismiss how you feel. I through my blender out and problem went away for 3 years until now. ITs back out of nowhere. Things that may be able to help manage problem. lorazapam, inhaler, singular, try anti histamines and teas. good luck

Omg! I am going through the same thing ... This has never happen to me... I think all this started since the 9-11 incedent... Everytine I see a plane in the sky that could actually see its windows or tire coming out i get paniky. ..hearing the sound of a plane fly by gives me anxiety or panic attack... its kinda scary cause I never felt like this... my new thing is that only at times I wake up breathing hard cause I think I am not breathing right...

I had a upper respiratory flu and was not able to breathe because of panic attacks for 4 days went to the hospital and they told me I was having a heart attack. This was diagnosed wrongly. If I was having a heart attack why was I in the waiting room for 2 hours. I told them it was panic attacks because once I relaxed myself and stayed in one position the Panic would subside comma I still had the upper respiratory flu. The doctor argued with me back and forth telling me I am having a heart attack they went in and gave me a angiogram and said that my heart looked wonderful there was no blockage now when I go to the doctors they tell me that I have had a heart attack and I can't get up off my medical records.
