I have never taken a drug like this before am worried it will add weight to me, and if I start it and don't like it, is it hard to get off it?
Does Effexor XR cause weight gain and is it hard to get off the meds?

Also, what are the side effects of getting off this? I take tramadol and it says not to, but the doctor still has given this to me. I have not started it yet.

With regards to weight gain, with this antidepressant common side effects are weight gain or loss as well as appetite increased or decreased, these potential side effects affect 1% to 10% of patients, now, it depends how your metabolism reacts to the medication, it can go either way.
If you stop this medication gradually under medical supervision with a discontinuation schedule from your DR./ Psychiatrist the potential withdrawal symptoms are minimum if none.
Regarding the potential interaction which is considered a major interaction between both medications, your Dr. is most likely aware of this potential interaction and has outweighed that the benefits of taking them is greater than the potential risks and would not put you in harms way.

As I mentioned the side effects or interaction may or may not affect you and if you experience any most likely it will be the very common to common ones which subside within a week to 10 days, if after that period of time they do not subside do inform your Dr., also communicating with your Dr. is important.
Click on the link so you can have access to more information on the antidepressant, do not be afraid of the potential side effects, as I mentioned they may or may not affect and if they do most likely will be the common ones:
