I am on two antidepressant meds and whenever I take herbal supplements or vitamins there is an interaction. I have not had any interaction issues with other drugs I have taken. Why is this?
Drug and supplement interactions?

Hi, Riscassi!
Every drug has a different chemical formulation and it just may so happen that the antidepressants you take have the potential for interaction. Just because it's a vitamin or supplement or a so-called "natural" substance doesn't mean that is entirely safe especially when mixed with certain prescription drugs. Many OTC's can cause serious interactions and can also have side effects that you may not be aware of.
What medications, vitamins, and supplements are you taking? You may be able to use the Interaction Checker to help predict possible problems but you should always inform your doctor and pharmacist of ALL medications and OTC's that you're taking and get professional advice.
Thank you Wildcat Vet. The two antidepressant meds I'm on are Trintellix and Remeron (I take mirtazapine the generic). The supplements that have interacted with these meds are, Maca root powder, horny goat weed, Saw Palmetto Berry powder, L-Arginine HCI, Panax Ginsing root powder, Tongkat Ali, a few others all in one capsule. I noticed the interaction after just one dose of the herbal pills. While other pills like, fish oil, Vitamin B-12 500mg. it took several weeks to build up before I noticed an interaction.
I'm just frustrated that I can't take advantage of supplements that offer benefits simply because I take anti-depressant meds.
