Had to respond to this because it came up as one of the first articles when I searched for 1 mg hurting my liver
20 mg is the highest recommended does of this medication
If you are taking 50mg ( 25mg twice a day) change your doctor
To others this amount is not normal I was put on six mg which made other doctors question my doctors motives
Not a proffesional in any way just have been made a lab rat enough to know what is not right for benzo intact
I'm not sure how old you are, but us oldies remember Karen Ann Quinlan. She had ONE valium, and ONE drink. She didn't die, but she ended up in a coma. the reason we know about her is because her parents fought to take her off of all life supporting devices. This was the early 70's when there were no DNR's. Well, everyone thought that she was going to die, but she didn't. She ended up living for 10 more years as a vegetable. I realize that she is just one person... but do you want to take the chance? Don't say that just because you don't have a drink means that you aren't normal. I stopped drinking in college when I realized that I had a VERY bad stomach, and I would be in horrific pain after each drink. I finally decided it wasn't worth the pain. I'm on meds now that don't mix with alcohol, but I have just as much fun without it as I did with it. In fact, I think that I have MORE fun, because I am ALWAYS in control of what I say and do. I get to watch other people be silly. Just a thought.
msftno, Great point, I remember the story well! Lisa Z.
I’m not support alcohol and antidepressant usage, but she took Quaaludes and had a few gin and tonics, not one drink. I’m on the side of being safe not sorry, but most doctors say one drink is ok.
Wger2824, I'm going to take a different angle on this one... and seeing that you are going to the party this weekend, it's too late; but I think this is something you should do for future reference.
Get this info STRAIGHT FROM THE HORSE'S MOUTH - i.e. YOUR DOCTOR! I am not familiar with the drugs you consume, so I don't know what their interaction with alcohol is. But just for me, as I often go out to dinner here in NYC, and as my friends tend to share a bottle of wine when we dine, I DID ask my doctor about this. I take depakote. I'm not a fan of wine, as it's too strong for me, and I never was much of a drinker. The only alcoholic drink I DO enjoy is called cider (can't be gotten everywhere, as it's mostly a European drink), and if the eatery doesn't have my drink, I stick to coke.
But my doc said it's fine with MY drug to have ONE bottle of this drink about twice a month. It's 6% alcohol, same as a beer, and contains just fermented apples and yeast. Bear in mind that I don't struggle with alcohol issues; and at the grand old age of 48, I'm not intending to go on a rampage at this stage! And I don't feel that it impacts me negatively... my liver function readings (something you have to worry about with depakote) are low, and so twice a month, with my doc's blessing's, this is what I do!
So my advice here is that this is a good future question to run by your doctor. It may be that it is inadvisable with this nature of drugs to have a drink - but then again, maybe not! If you don't have a history of alcohol problems, you have the OK from your doctor for certain limited time periods, and you are confident that you can leave it at one, then it's not problematic to my mind. Hey, you only live once, and if you are strict to MODERATE in your living habits, then you are doing fine! Moderation is the key word to everything in life... it's just when things are done to excess that it presents an issue for you. But speak to your doctor about this - he's the one who can properly answer this question.
Dear Wger2824,
I almost didn't answer this, because the two previous posters hit the nail on the head, but I just want you to be very careful. It's a very dangerous game to mix the two. I know you are not an alcoholic, but Klonopin stays in your system a long time. Even if you skip a dose, it's probably still in you're system. If you had the one drink only, you're probably going to be ok, but some people don't just have one. Just be very careful mixing the two. The Klonopin will intensify the alcohol. I don't think it's the wisest decision, but you're going to do what you're going to do. So you should just be very very careful. Best wishes to you, Ruth
Just wanted to add that you could have a ginger ale with a cherry like Lisa said. Your not a drinker anyways. Be an example too. I hope you have a great time at your party. Have fun and be safe. Ruth
Thanks guys, I decided not even to attempt it. Not worth the risk , plus the result of the next day just make my situation worst for me.
My boyfriend doesn't really drink either and he is very supportive. We will stay for a while and leave after dinner.
Well you know noone can tell you what to do honey, but I'm proud of you. And I want you to know that we are here for you should you have any question's about anything. We're honest and will tell you the truth. But we care. We want the very best for you. Period. I'm sure you'll have a blast anyways. Just be yourself and no worries. Your friend Ruth
I pretty much agree with Pledge. I am a recovering alcoholic and I usually (almost never) could have "a" drink! While I don't think one glass of wine would kill you, it could make you ill and if it's only one glass of wine than what are you really missing? Don't mess with your med dose, go to the party , have a ginger ale (or whatever non-alcoholic), in a wine glass, put a lime or a cherry in it! No one else can tell your not drinking and enjoy yourself without the danger! Just a suggestion, hope it helps! Lisa Z.
Thanks lisajznj
What I remember from having a glass of wine. Is that it relaxed me. I am still struggling with me meds and still have not found the correct mixture
Yesterday was a day I depression not sure what happened but it was rough
Just want to be able to enjoy life a little without so many restrictions
Everyone says that klonopin and Zoloft are the best mixture for panic attack and aniexty but I am not so sure it is
I have to agree with Pledge & Lisa on this one. Alcohol no matter the amount is a depressant, & shouldn't be mixed with your current meds. You can still have fun without the drink. Take lisa' adivice & have a gingerale with a cherry in it. Who really cares what others think, plus you would be sertting a good example for others showing you don't need the drink to let you have a good time... Just my thoughts...
Hello Wger2824. I really am always hesitant to answer a question such as the one you asked. Benzodiazepines and alcohol, are not the safest of mixs. The klonopin is a long acting benzodiazepine and will be in your system for when you have that glass of wine, even when skipping the dose. Often people say, its only one glass of this or two ounces of that, it can't really hurt. True enough, but say a person has a bad reaction to the mixture, then that person is in a thickle. Theres the Zoloft, that is going to mix and you'll become lathargic. Its a fair question, and you'll hear from others. My own point of view, no, not worth the possible misery. Stay the course, enjoy the party, but alcohol free. (not meant to be a grinch here) Regards, pledge
Thanks pledge
I know your right I was hoping to be normal for one night
Say Wger, you are normal. No shame or stigma in taking your meds. Thats what they are. Medication. People who have a cancer get treated. your diagnosis is different, thats the only difference. But feel good about who you are. Take a bow. Have a great afternoon, evening.
