... since we are not what? Soy? Soy doesn't contain all that much vitamin K but if you're worried about the weight gain that many of us seem to have with Coumadin, then I would go for the low or no-fat or ice cream.
None of the ice cream I eat contains soy. To me its not ice cream. Haagen daz and the better brands don't have all the extras in them. Why can't you eat soy? I've been teaching diet related to warfarin for many years and never ran across that one.
I have never heard the no soy with coumadin either!
Actually we just tell them not to eat stuff real high in K, and not to alter their diet much. The coumadin dose is then done according your inr with what you're eating.
Thanks kaismama. I was given a sheet from Dr office, that said soybean oil in products very high in vit K. Mayo high in vit K. Eating potato salad ran my INR high. Also, the B vitamin Biotin ran it high. After the coumadin clinic said to watch out for Biotin, I looked it up on net and it will thin your blood. How does one get the teachings you said you were doing. So many of us need your teachings. I try to keep a record of what I eat and learn after I run my INR too high. Thanks again for any help.
Do you have a coumadin clinic near you? If someone goes home from the hospital on coumadin and needs inr's drawn medicare pays for a visiting nurse to go in and teach the meds and draw the blood, if they cannot get out easily because of illness. With the foods high in vit k, we taught that if you had them, like a tbsp of mayo every day, then it would be ok because the coumadin would be dosed based on that diet. Don't do anything your dr told you not to, but learn all you can.
