Porfimer Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Warnings

Porfimer is also known as: Photofrin

Porfimer Pregnancy Warnings

Porfimer has been assigned to pregnancy category C by the FDA. Animal studies have revealed that doses which caused maternal and fetal toxicity have resulted in increased resorptions, decreased litter size, delayed ossification, and reduced fetal weight. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Porfimer should only be given during pregnancy when benefits outweigh risks. It is recommended that women of childbearing potential practice an effective method of contraception during therapy.

Porfimer Breastfeeding Warnings

There are no data on the excretion of porfimer into human milk. Because many drugs are excreted in human milk and because of the potential for serious adverse reactions due to porfimer in nursing infants, a decision should be made to discontinue nursing or discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.
