Fresh & Ready Foods Recalls Products After Listeria Outbreak
By I. Edwards HealthDay Reporter
TUESDAY, May 13, 2025 — At least 10 people in the U.S. were hospitalized with listeria infections linked to ready-to-eat foods, federal officials said.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other agencies traced the outbreak to foods produced by Fresh & Ready Foods LLC of San Fernando, California. The people who got sick were in California and Nevada, according to a report from CNN.
The recalled products were sold in Arizona, California, Nevada and Washington. The items were sold at hospitals, hotels, convenience stores, airports, airlines and other places.
Listeria symptoms typically develop within two weeks of eating tainted food. Common symptoms include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. In serious cases, people can experience headaches, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance or seizures.
The FDA said the outbreak investigation began last year but was reopened in April after listeria was found in food samples from Fresh & Ready Foods. The bacteria matched the strain linked to the sick patients, CNN reported.
In a news release, Fresh & Ready Foods said the company acted quickly, including removing equipment, to fix the problem. The FDA also found that six of the 10 patients had been hospitalized before developing listeria.
Products from Fresh & Ready Foods were served at least three of those health care facilities.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said samples from sick patients were collected between December 2023 and September 2024.
Fresh & Ready Foods has voluntarily recalled products with "use by" dates from April 22 to May 19, 2025, CNN said.
The items were sold under the brand names Fresh & Ready Foods, City Point Market Fresh Food to Go and Fresh Take Crave Away.
