7.9 Percent of People of All Ages Uninsured in January to June 2024
FRIDAY, Dec. 6, 2024 -- From January through June 2024, 7.9 percent of people of all ages in the United States were uninsured, according to a report published online Dec. 6 by the National Center for Health Statistics.
Elizabeth M. Briones, Ph.D., and Robin A. Cohen, Ph.D., from the National Center for Health Statistics in Hyattsville, Maryland, present health insurance coverage estimates for the first half of 2024 using data from the National Health Interview Survey.
The researchers found that 26.2 million people of all ages (7.9 percent) were uninsured from January through June 2024. This did not differ much from the 25.0 million people of all ages (7.6 percent) in 2023. Among adults aged 18 to 64 years, 11.1 percent were uninsured, 21.2 percent had public coverage, and 69.4 percent had private health insurance coverage at the time of the interview from January through June 2024. Compared with 23.0 percent in 2023, the percentage of adults ages 18 to 64 years who had public coverage in the first six months of 2024 was lower (21.2 percent). Among children aged 0 to 17 years, 4.9, 42.2, and 54.7 percent were uninsured, had public coverage, and had private health coverage, respectively, from January through June 2024.
From 2020 to the first six months of 2024, there was an increase seen in the percentage of people younger than 65 years with exchange-based coverage (3.8 to 6.0 percent).
