Wyeth Pharmaceuticals announced that patients who have received the Norplant System and who were using backup contraception may safely stop using backup methods for contraception. Previously, patients had been advised to use backup contraception due to concerns about lower than expected release of the hormone levonorgestrel from several specific lots. Wyeth also announced that it does not plan to resume distribution or marketing of the six-capsule Norplant System (levonorgestrel implants), which provides contraception for five years.[July 26, 2002 Talk Paper - FDA]
