Major

dextran, low molecular weight abciximab

Applies to: Rheomacrodex (dextran, low molecular weight) and ReoPro (abciximab)

CONTRAINDICATED: The risk of bleeding is increased when dextran and abciximab are administered concurrently. In the EPIC trial, 5 of 11 patients who received low molecular weight dextran, abciximab, and oral anticoagulants developed major bleeding and 4 of 11 had minor bleeding events, while there were no bleeding events in 5 patients who received placebo and dextran.

MANAGEMENT: The use of dextran before percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or intent to use it during PCI is considered contraindicated by the manufacturer of abciximab.
