Ertapenem Pregnancy Warnings

Ertapenem has been assigned to pregnancy category B by the FDA. Animal studies have revealed evidence of slightly decreased fetal weight and effects on vertebral ossification. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Ertapenem is only recommended for use during pregnancy when benefit outweighs risk.

Ertapenem is excreted into human milk. The effects in the nursing infant are unknown. The manufacturer recommends that caution be used when administering ertapenem to nursing women.
