Deferoxamine Pregnancy Warnings

This drug should not be used during pregnancy unless the benefit outweighs the risk to the fetus.

Risk summary: No data are available on the use of this drug in pregnant patients to inform a drug-related risk.

Comments:
-This drug can harm a developing fetus.
-Effective contraception in females of reproductive potential and male patients with female partners of reproductive potential should be used during therapy and for 1 month after the last dose; local protocol should be consulted regarding contraception timing.

Animal studies showed delayed ossification and skeletal anomalies. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy.

AU TGA pregnancy category B3: Drugs which have been taken by only a limited number of pregnant women and women of childbearing age, without an increase in the frequency of malformation or other direct or indirect harmful effects on the human fetus having been observed. Studies in animals have shown evidence of an increased occurrence of fetal damage, the significance of which is considered uncertain in humans.
