Interactions between your drugs

Major

aspirin sodium biphosphate

Applies to: Pravigard Pac (aspirin / pravastatin), Uro-458 (hyoscyamine / methenamine / methylene blue / phenyl salicylate / sodium biphosphate)

The following interaction applies only to products containing sodium biphosphate that are used for bowel cleansing. It does not apply to products containing sodium biphosphate that are used for other, non-laxative related purposes.

Bowel cleansing with sodium biphosphate can cause kidney failure, in some cases up to several months after the procedure. Although it rarely occurs, the risk is increased in individuals receiving treatment with aspirin, especially if they are also elderly or frail. You may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely use both medications. Combining these medications may also increase the risk of dehydration and electrolyte abnormalities. In severe cases, dehydration and electrolyte abnormalities can lead to irregular heart rhythm, seizures, and kidney problems. You should use sodium biphosphate exactly as prescribed by your doctor, and drink plenty of clear fluids before, during, and after the cleansing process to keep yourself hydrated. Your doctor may also recommend an electrolyte rehydration solution that you can use. Talk to your doctor if you have any concerns. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Moderate

aspirin phenyl salicylate

Applies to: Pravigard Pac (aspirin / pravastatin), Uro-458 (hyoscyamine / methenamine / methylene blue / phenyl salicylate / sodium biphosphate)

Using aspirin together with phenyl salicylate is generally not recommended. Combining these medications may increase the risk of side effects in the gastrointestinal tract such as inflammation, pain, bleeding, and ulceration. Bruising and other bleeding complications may also occur. You should take these medications with food to lessen gastrointestinal side effects. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications. You should seek immediate medical attention if you experience any unusual bleeding or bruising, or have other signs and symptoms of bleeding such as dizziness; lightheadedness; red or black, tarry stools; coughing up or vomiting fresh or dried blood that looks like coffee grounds; severe headache; and weakness. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Drug and food interactions

Moderate

sodium biphosphate food

Applies to: Uro-458 (hyoscyamine / methenamine / methylene blue / phenyl salicylate / sodium biphosphate)

Oral medications may not be properly absorbed when they are taken within one hour before starting sodium biphosphate for bowel cleansing. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist to see if you should adjust the dosing schedule of your other medications before you begin bowel cleansing treatment. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Moderate

aspirin food

Applies to: Pravigard Pac (aspirin / pravastatin)

Ask your doctor before using aspirin together with ethanol. Do not drink alcohol while taking aspirin. Alcohol can increase your risk of stomach bleeding caused by aspirin. Call your doctor at once if you have symptoms of bleeding in your stomach or intestines. This includes black, bloody, or tarry stools, or coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Moderate

pravastatin food

Applies to: Pravigard Pac (aspirin / pravastatin)

Pravastatin may cause liver problems and using it with substantial quantities of ethanol may increase that risk. You should limit the use of alcohol while being treated with these medications. Call your doctor immediately if you have fever, chills, joint pain or swelling, unusual bleeding or bruising, skin rash, itching, loss of appetite, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, pale stools, and/or yellowing of the skin or eyes, as these may be signs and symptoms of liver damage. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Moderate

hyoscyamine food

Applies to: Uro-458 (hyoscyamine / methenamine / methylene blue / phenyl salicylate / sodium biphosphate)

Ask your doctor before using hyoscyamine together with ethanol. Use alcohol cautiously. Alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness while you are taking hyoscyamine. You should be warned not to exceed recommended dosages and to avoid activities requiring mental alertness. If your doctor prescribes these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment to safely take this combination. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Therapeutic duplication warnings

Therapeutic duplication is the use of more than one medicine from the same drug category or therapeutic class to treat the same condition. This can be intentional in cases where drugs with similar actions are used together for demonstrated therapeutic benefit. It can also be unintentional in cases where a patient has been treated by more than one doctor, or had prescriptions filled at more than one pharmacy, and can have potentially adverse consequences.

Duplication

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories

Therapeutic duplication

The recommended maximum number of medicines in the 'nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories' category to be taken concurrently is usually one. Your list includes two medicines belonging to the 'nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories' category:

  • Pravigard Pac (aspirin / pravastatin)
  • Uro-458 (hyoscyamine / methenamine / methylene blue / phenyl salicylate / sodium biphosphate)

Note: In certain circumstances, the benefits of taking this combination of drugs may outweigh any risks. Always consult your healthcare provider before making changes to your medications or dosage.
