Concomitant administration of oral miconazole may increase the plasma levels of rifabutin and the risk of adverse effects. The possible mechanism of this interaction is inhibition of CYP450 3A4. In addition, rifabutin may increase the metabolism and decrease the plasma levels of miconazole due to induction of CYP450 enzymes. The clinical significance of this interaction is unknown because systemic absorption from buccal and oral gel dosage forms is significantly lower than with parenteral administration.
