Drug interactions

Moderate drug interactions

Moderate:

folic acid pancrelipase

Applies to: folic acid and Ultrase MT 18 (pancrelipase)

Pancrelipase may reduce the effectiveness of folic acid and iron by interfering with their absorption. To prevent or minimize the interaction, you should separate the dosing times of pancrelipase and any product containing folic acid or iron by as much as possible. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Food/lifestyle interactions

Moderate food/lifestyle interactions

Moderate:

folic acid Food/Lifestyle

Applies to: folic acid

Talk to your doctor before using alcohol together with folic acid. Excessive consumption of alcohol may reduce the absorption and increase the elimination of folic acid. Contact your doctor if your symptoms worsen or your condition changes. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Moderate:

pancrelipase multivitamins with minerals

Applies to: Ultrase MT 18 (pancrelipase)

Disease interactions

3 potential interactions Applies to: 3 conditions, including Gout, Renal Dysfunction, and Anemia of Unspecified Nutritional Deficiency.

Anemia of Unspecified Nutritional Deficiency

Major:

folic acid

Folic acid has a major potential interaction with Anemia of Unspecified Nutritional Deficiency.

The use of folic acid is contraindicated in patients with undiagnosed anemia. Folic acid in dosages above 1 mg/day can obscure the diagnosis of pernicious anemia by alleviating the hematologic abnormalities while allowing the progression of neurologic complications. In addition, folic acid alone is improper therapy in the treatment of pernicious anemia and other megaloblastic anemias where vitamin B12 is deficient.

Gout

Moderate:

Ultrase MT 18

The pancrelipase in Ultrase MT 18 has a moderate potential interaction with Gout.

Porcine-derived pancreatic enzyme products contain purines that may increase blood uric acid levels. Extremely high dosages of exogenous pancreatic enzymes have also been associated with hyperuricosuria and hyperuricemia. Therapy with pancrelipase should be administered cautiously in patients with preexisting hyperuricemia, gout, or renal impairment. Monitoring of serum uric acid levels is recommended.

Renal Dysfunction

Moderate:

Ultrase MT 18

The pancrelipase in Ultrase MT 18 has a moderate potential interaction with Renal Dysfunction.

Porcine-derived pancreatic enzyme products contain purines that may increase blood uric acid levels.
