Therapeutic duplication warnings
Therapeutic duplication is the use of more than one medicine from the same drug category or therapeutic class to treat the same condition.
It can be intentional, when combining drugs with similar actions adds demonstrated therapeutic benefit — or unintentional, such as when a patient sees multiple prescribers or fills prescriptions at more than one pharmacy, which can lead to adverse effects.
Duplication:
Iron preparations
The recommended maximum number of medicines in the 'iron preparations' category to be taken concurrently is usually one. Your list includes two medicines belonging to the 'iron preparations' category:
- ferric carboxymaltose
- Multifol Plus (multivitamin, prenatal)
Note: In certain circumstances, the benefits of taking this combination of drugs may outweigh any risks. Always consult your healthcare provider before making changes to your medications or dosage.
Food/lifestyle interactions
Moderate food/lifestyle interactions
Moderate:
multivitamins, prenatal Food/Lifestyle
Applies to: Multifol Plus (multivitamin, prenatal)
Food may reduce the absorption and blood levels of multivitamins, prenatal. In addition, some oral medications can also interfere with multivitamins, prenatal absorption into the bloodstream, which may make the medication less effective in treating your condition. Likewise, multivitamins, prenatal may interfere with the absorption of other orally administered medications. You should take multivitamins, prenatal on an empty stomach at least one hour before or two hours after a meal. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications.
