Drug Interactions between cobicistat / elvitegravir / emtricitabine / tenofovir alafenamide and phenytoin
This report displays the potential drug interactions for the following 2 drugs:
- cobicistat/elvitegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide
- phenytoin
Interactions between your drugs
phenytoin tenofovir
Applies to: phenytoin and cobicistat / elvitegravir / emtricitabine / tenofovir alafenamide
Phenytoin may significantly reduce the blood levels of tenofovir from certain preparations, which may make it less effective in treating your condition. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
phenytoin cobicistat
Applies to: phenytoin and cobicistat / elvitegravir / emtricitabine / tenofovir alafenamide
Using cobicistat together with phenytoin is not recommended. Combining these medications may decrease the blood levels of cobicistat, which may reduce its effectiveness in treating HIV infection. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
phenytoin elvitegravir
Applies to: phenytoin and cobicistat / elvitegravir / emtricitabine / tenofovir alafenamide
Using elvitegravir together with phenytoin is not recommended. Combining these medications may significantly decrease the blood levels of elvitegravir, which may reduce its effectiveness in treating HIV infection. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
tenofovir cobicistat
Applies to: cobicistat / elvitegravir / emtricitabine / tenofovir alafenamide and cobicistat / elvitegravir / emtricitabine / tenofovir alafenamide
Using cobicistat together with tenofovir can increase the effects of tenofovir, which can cause new or worse kidney problems. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. Contact your doctor if your condition changes or you experience increased side effects. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
emtricitabine cobicistat
Applies to: cobicistat / elvitegravir / emtricitabine / tenofovir alafenamide and cobicistat / elvitegravir / emtricitabine / tenofovir alafenamide
Cobicistat is a medication used to boost the effects of some medications that treat HIV infection. However, using cobicistat together with other HIV medications, such as emtricitabine, may alter the blood levels and effects of both medications. Using emtricitabine with cobicistat may reduce or increase blood levels of cobicistat. Reduced blood levels of cobicistat may make cobicistat less effective and may cause overall HIV treatment to be less effective. Cobicistat may increase blood levels of emtricitabine which may increase the risk of side effects. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions on how to use these medications properly. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications. Contact your doctor if your condition changes or you experience increased side effects. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Drug and food interactions
phenytoin food
Applies to: phenytoin
Phenytoin levels may decrease when the suspension is given with enteral feedings. This could lead to a loss of seizure control. You could interrupt the feeding for 2 hours before and after the phenytoin dose. Alternatively, you may give the phenytoin suspension diluted in water and flush the tube with water after administration. These would make it easier for your body to absorb the medication. However, this still may not entirely avoid the interaction and may not always be feasible. You should have your phenytoin levels checked upon starting and stopping of enteral feedings. In addition, using phenytoin together with food may alter the effects of phenytoin. Contact your doctor if you experience worsening of seizure control or symptoms of toxicity, including twitching eye movements, slurred speech, loss of balance, tremor, muscle stiffness or weakness, nausea, vomiting, feeling light-headed, fainting, and slow or shallow breathing. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Ask your doctor before making any changes to your therapy.
elvitegravir food
Applies to: cobicistat / elvitegravir / emtricitabine / tenofovir alafenamide
Food significantly increases the absorption of elvitegravir. You should take each dose of elvitegravir with a meal. Taking it on an empty stomach may lead to inadequate blood levels and reduced effectiveness of the medication in treating HIV infection.
tenofovir food
Applies to: cobicistat / elvitegravir / emtricitabine / tenofovir alafenamide
