If you are currently being treated with ampicillin or have been treated within the last 14 days, you should talk to your doctor before receiving cholera vaccine, live. Antibiotics like ampicillin may reduce the activity of the vaccine. To ensure adequate vaccine response, you should not receive cholera vaccine, live until at least 14 days after you complete your ampicillin therapy. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

You may experience reduced absorption of ampicillin in the presence of food. The effectiveness of the antibiotic may be reduced. Ampicillin should be administered one hour before or two hours after meals. This will make it easier for your body to absorb the medication. Penicillin V and amoxicillin are not affected by food and may be given without regard to meals.
